Jonathan W. Greenert (born May 15, 1953 in Butler , Pennsylvania ) is a former admiral in the US Navy . From September 23, 2011 to September 18, 2015, he served as Chief of Naval Operations .

Military career

Greenert graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering and was then trained as a nuclear submarine officer.

He has served on several boats, including the Materials Electronics Officer on the USS Flying Fish (SSN-673) , the Operations / Electrical Officer on the USS Tautog (SSN-639), and the Engineering Officer on the NR-1 Deep Submergence Craft . He assumed the post of Executive Officer of the Gold Crew on USS Michigan (SSBN-727) and finally took up his first command of the USS Honolulu (SSN-718) in March 1991 .

After serving at sea, Greenert served as Commander of Submarine Squadron 11 and as the West Coast representative of the Commander of the Submarine Forces Pacific from July 1996 to June 1997. In July 1997 Greenert was then transferred to Yokosuka , Japan , and served there as Chief of Staff of the 7th US Fleet . During this employment he was promoted to Rear Admiral and then took over from October 1998 to December 1999 the post of representative of the commander of the US Pacific Command in Micronesia and was also the commander of the US Navy forces in the Mariana Islands . In January 2000, he assumed the post of Director of Operations in the US Navy Bureau of Accounting. From August 2002 to July 2004, Greenert served as Deputy Chief of Staff in the US Pacific Fleet under Admiral Walter F. Doran at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base . He was then transferred again to Japan, where on August 6, 2004 he took over command of the 7th US fleet, responsible for the western Pacific and Indian Ocean, based in Yokosuka.

Back in the United States served Greenert from 2006 in the Department of Defense as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations , responsible for integration of capabilities and resources (N8) in the headquarters of the US Navy under the command of Admiral Michael Mullen . On September 29, 2007, he took over the US Fleet Forces Command from Gary Roughead in Norfolk , Virginia . In April 2009 he was nominated for the post of Vice Chief of Naval Operations . Admiral John C. Harvey junior took over his post in the US Fleet Forces Command .

On 13 August 2009 Greenert took over from Patrick M. Walsh the post of vice chief of naval operations . In June 2011, Defense Secretary Robert Gates officially proposed that Greenert be nominated as the new Chief of Naval Operations . On September 23, 2011, he succeeded Admiral Gary Roughead in this office.
