James Lemuel Holloway III. (Born February 23, 1922 in Charleston , South Carolina ; † November 26, 2019 in Alexandria , Virginia ) was an American naval officer. Most recently he was Admiral and Chief of Naval Operations .

Life

Holloway was a son of Admiral James L. Holloway junior (1898-1984). From 1939 he attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis . In 1942 he graduated from the academy. It was first used on a destroyer in convoy protection in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II . In 1944 he served as an artillery officer on the destroyer USS Bennion in the Pacific. He took part in several battles, including the sea ​​and air battles in the Gulf of Leyte . The destroyer USS Bennion was involved in the sinking of the battleship Yamashiro by torpedoes . He received the Order Bronze Star Medal and Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his service in this naval battle in the Gulf of Leyte .

After the Second World War he became a naval pilot. During the Korean War he was a pilot of the Grumman F9F on an aircraft carrier. He was taking command of a squadron when his commanding officer was shot down. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three times the Air Medal .

From 1965 to 1967 Holloway was in command of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) . He led the carrier in two combat missions in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Legion of Merit twice. In 1968 he was involved in the planning of the construction of the carrier USS Nimitz (CVN-68) in the Pentagon and received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal .

1970 to 1971 he was commander of the Carrier Striking Force of the United States Sixth Fleet and received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for the second time. 1972 to 1973 he led the United States Seventh Fleet in the Vietnam War, which took part in Operation Linebacker . He received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for the third time.

From 1973 to 1974 he was Vice Chief of Naval Operations . Subsequently, Admiral James L. Holloway III. on June 29, 1974 finally himself Chief of Naval Operations and thus the highest ranking officer and chief of the General Staff of the US Navy. He held this position until his retirement on July 1, 1978. As Chief, he received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for the fourth time and the Defense Distinguished Service Medal twice . In 1978 he was also awarded the Federal Cross of Merit with a star and shoulder ribbon .

Even after his retirement from active military service, he remained connected to the Navy and was not only temporarily chairman of the Association of Naval Aviation (Association of Naval Aviators) , but also Chairman of Marine History Foundation (Naval Historical Foundation) .

He also became involved in numerous other institutions and was a board member of the Defense Forum Foundation , trustee (Trustee) of the George C. Marshall Foundation and board member of the George and Carol Olmsted Foundation .

He died in Alexandria, Virginia on November 26, 2019, at the age of 97.
