Frank Benton Kelso II (born July 11, 1933 in Fayetteville , Tennessee ; † June 23, 2013 there ) was an American admiral in the US Navy . He was both Chief of Naval Operations and Acting Secretary of the Navy .

biography

After attending school, he first studied at the University of the South at Sewanee and then at the US Naval Academy . After its termination in 1956, he joined the US Navy and was a member of it until 1994. During his military career in 1985 he was admiral in command of the US 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean . During this time, Operation Attain Document took place, a military operation by United States ships in the Mediterranean, north and in the Great Syrte . He was then from June 30, 1986 to November 4, 1988 Commander in Chief of the US Atlantic Fleet .

He then became Commander in Chief of the US Atlantic Command in 1988 and at the same time Supreme Allied Commander in the Atlantic (SACLANT). On June 29, 1990, he was appointed Chief of Naval Operations and thus the most senior officer and chief of staff in the US Navy. He held this post until his retirement on April 23, 1994.

During that time, he was also acting Secretary of the Navy from January 2 to July 21, 1993, at the end of President George Bush's tenure and during Bill Clinton's first few months in office . He then passed this post to John Howard Dalton , who took office on July 22, 1993.

Kelso died in June 2013 after a fall in which he sustained severe head injuries.
