Ephraim Paul Holmes (born May 14, 1908 in Downsville , † February 23, 1997 in Williamsburg (Virginia) ) was an American officer who reached the rank of admiral in the United States Navy .

Military career

He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland in 1930 . He spent the first year of his military career aboard cruisers and destroyers, including the light cruiser Milwaukee and the heavy cruiser USS Augusta (CA-31) . In 1932 he was transferred to the USS Houston (CA-30) , the flagship of the United States Asiatic Fleet , and from 1933 to 1935 he served on the destroyer USS Peary (DD-226) .

He studied communication at the Naval Postgraduate School . After graduating, he served on the USS Maryland (BB-36) . 1939 and witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor while serving as a lieutenant on the staff of the Commander Battle Ships, Battle Force. He took part in the Battle of the Coral Sea and had his first command on the newly commissioned destroyer USS Stockham (DD-683) . He took part in the Battle of the Philippines and the Battle of Saipan with this destroyer . After the war, he studied at Naval War College in Newport, RI and then served in the amphibious fleet of the Atlantic Fleet. He was promoted to Admiral in 1957 and became Chief of Naval Operations . He served in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and again in the Pacific, where he commanded the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet and the First Fleet . Prior to his last and highest position as Commander in Chief Atlantic Fleet, he was director of a naval planning program that worked for the Chief of Naval Operations . In 1970 he retired from military service with the rank of admiral.
