Gehman, whose father Harold Webster Gehman was also an officer in the US Navy, began studying industrial engineering at Pennsylvania State University after finishing school , from which he graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Industrial Engineering). He then completed officer training as part of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps program and then joined the US Navy . During the Vietnam War he served as a lieutenant in the First Corps ( I Corps ) and then was in charge of the officer as patrol boat used speedboat ( Patrol Craft Fast / Swift Boat ) PCF 27, and later in charge officer of an independent unit of six PCF.
