Leon Albert "Bud" Edney (* 1. March 1935 in Dedham , Massachusetts ) is a retired admiral of the US Navy , among others 1988-1990 Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy ( Vice Chief of Naval Operations ) , and most recently in 1990 until 1992 was both Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in the Atlantic (SACLANT) and Supreme Commander of the US Atlantic Command USLANTCOM ( US Atlantic Command ) .

Life

Military training and the Vietnam War

Edney completed an officer training in the US Navy after school and found numerous uses in naval units after graduation. After training as an aviator, he became a pilot in the U-Boot-Jagdstaffel 27 in 1958 and then in the U-Boot-Jagdstaffel 24. He completed a postgraduate degree at Harvard University and was then from 1963 to 1965 special assistant to the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff for research and development.
