history
The Constellation was built at the New York Naval Shipyard and entered service in 1961. The US aircraft carrier was the last to be designed without nuclear propulsion. Shortly after the launch, on December 19, 1960, a fire broke out on board, killing 50 workers, injuring 323 and delaying final completion by a few months.
The ship, which was stationed in the Pacific, was first relocated in 1963. In 1964 the Constellation sailed, among other things, the Gulf of Tonkin , after the so-called Tonkin incident , it returned there. The carrier was able to record a Navy Unit Commendation for this relocation and has been nicknamed Connie ever since .
After eight months in the shipyard, a second voyage into the Vietnam War began in 1966 , followed by three more by 1969. In 1970 the porter was in dry dock, and in 1971 the Constellation was off the coast of Vietnam again. The last Vietnam War Relocation took place in 1973.
In November 1974, the Constellation was the first aircraft carrier to sail in the Persian Gulf since 1949 . This was followed by an overhaul in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard , then a repair phase in the Long Beach Naval Shipyard . Further relocations took place in 1978/1979 and 1980, including the Constellation took part in the RIMPAC exercise. Relocations followed in 1981/1982 and 1985, in between there was a further layover in the Puget Sound. In 1987, the Constellation took part in Operation Earnest Will , which earned the team the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal .
The Constellation got a guest appearance on the show Listen, Who's That Hammering with Tim Allen
In 1990 the Constellation was overhauled at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard as part of a Service Life Extension program for $ 800 million. The next transfer followed in 1994, where she took part in exercises. In 1995 the Constellation took part in Operation Southern Watch , including operating with the guided missile cruisers USS Lake Erie (CG-70) and USS Chosin (CG-65) . Further journeys followed in 1997, 1999 and 2001. In 2003, during the Iraq war , the carrier served in the Persian Gulf.
In September 2000, the Constellation was the double of the USS Hornet in the filming of the film Pearl Harbor
On August 7, 2003, the company was finally decommissioned. The ship was then in the reserve fleet .
On June 13, 2014, the ship was sold for $ 3 million in Brownsville, Texas for scrapping. It arrived there on January 16, 2015.
