Admiral Jay L. Johnson

Jay L. Johnson (born June 5, 1946 in Great Falls , Montana ) is a former admiral in the US Navy and was the 26th Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) from 1996 to 2000 . He took over the post after the death of Admiral Jeremy M. Boorda .

Military career

Johnson was born in Great Falls , Montana and grew up in West Salem , Wisconsin . He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1968 . After completing his flight training, Johnson became a naval aviator in 1969 .

His first deployment on a carrier was on the USS Oriskany (CV-34) , on which he flew the F8J "Crusader" of the "Fighter Squadron One Nine One (VF-191)". Later "Squadrons" and missions after the conversion to the F-14 Tomcat were: VF-142, VF-101, commanding officer of the VF-84; Commander Air Group (CAG) of Carrier Air Wing One; Assistant to the Chief of Operations of the SIXTH Fleet ; and CAG of Carrier Air Wing One as "Senior Air Wing Commander".

His first command as a flag officer was in the US Navy Personnel Office. In October 1992 he became the commander of Carrier Combat Group Eight, USS Theodore Roosevelt . In July 1994 Johnson became the commander of the Second Fleet .

From March 1996, he served as the 28th Vice Chief of Naval Operations in the United States Department of Defense in Washington, DC Following the suicide of Adm. Jeremy M. Boorda , Adm. Johnson was the 26th Chief of May 16, 1996 to July 21, 2000 Naval Operations .

Jay Johnson will serve on the General Dynamics board of directors from September 2008 and as of July 1, 2009 as Chief Executive Officer .
