Thomas Bibb Hayward (born May 3, 1924 in Glendale , California ) is a former American admiral in the US Navy and Chief of Naval Operations .

biography

After attending school, he graduated from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1947 and then joined the US Navy.

During his military career he became in 1971 Director of the Office of Program Assessment of Marine ( Office of Program Appraisal ) in the Ministry of Defense of the United States and subsequently from 1973 to 1975 director of the Marine programming ( Navy Program Planning ) in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations .

After a further one-year activity as commander of the western Pacific and Indian Ocean operating US 7th Fleet , he was August 12, 1976 to May 9, 1978 Supreme Commander in Pearl Harbor stationed US Pacific Fleet .

On July 1, 1978 Admiral Thomas B. Hayward finally became Chief of Naval Operations himself and thus the highest ranking officer and chief of the General Staff of the US Navy. While serving his wife Peggy Hayward was on November 25, 1978 godmother when launching the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA-5) . He held this position until he retired on June 30, 1982.

He has received several awards for his military services and, in addition to the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross, also received the Legion of Merit . He was also involved in the Council on Foreign Relations .
