The Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is a distinguished honor given by the United States for personal service to the United States Coast Guard and was donated on August 4, 1949. Up until that point, members of the United States Coast Guard were eligible to receive the Navy Distinguished Service Medal . The Homeland Security Distinguished Service Medal , which replaced the Transportation Distinguished Service Medal in 2002, is another award that members of the United States Coast Guard can receive.

This award is in the Pyramid of Honor like the Distinguished Service Medal of the United States Department of Defense ( Defense Distinguished Service Medal ) and that of the individual armed forces (Navy, Army, Air Force and Homeland Security), but under the Cross of Merit ( Coast Guard Cross , Distinguished Service Cross , Navy Cross and Air Force Cross ).

One step below the Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medal is the Silver Star .
