Gary Roughead

Gary Roughead (* 15. July 1951 ) is an Admiral of the US Navy and served from September 2007 to September 2011 as the 29th Chief of Naval Operations .

Military career

Roughead graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis , Maryland in 1973 . He began his career on the USS Josephus Daniels (CG-27) and later served as first officer on the patrol boats Douglas and Tacoma . Subsequently, he was chief engineer and first officer on two Spruance-class destroyers , first on the USS O'Bannon (DD-987) , then on the USS Spruance (DD-963) . When he took command of the USS Barry (DDG-52) and later the USS Port Royal (CG-73) , he became the first officer to command both classes of Aegis ships ( Arleigh Burke class and Ticonderoga class ) .

The first combat group Roughead commanded was the Cruiser Destroyer Group Two , then the aircraft carrier combat group around the USS George Washington (CVN 73) .

On land, he served on the staffs of the Commander, Naval Surface Force, US Atlantic Fleet , Secretary of the Navy, and Commander of US Pacific Command and was in command of the US Naval Academy . Between 2005 and 2007, Roughead was the commander of the US Pacific Fleet . In May 2007 he then took over command of the US Fleet Forces Command .

On September 29, 2007 Roughead then took over the post of Chief of Naval Operations from Michael G. Mullen . Roughead's successor on the post of Commander of the US Fleet Forces Command was taken over by Vice Adm . Jonathan W. Greenert . After four years as Chief of Naval Operations, Roughead retired in September 2011. Greenert also inherited him as CNO.
