Vice Chief of Naval Operations
The Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO; dt. About: Deputy Commander of Naval Operations) is the second highest officer in the US Navy . He is the first advisor and deputy to the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO).
He can also work as the acting CNO if the actual CNO is indisposed. He also takes on tasks assigned to him by the CNO.
The position of the VCNO requires the rank of admiral and the approval of the US Senate .
The service position of the VCNO was established as Assistant for Operations in 1915 and renamed Assistant Chief of Naval Operations in 1922. From 1942 onwards the title was Vice Chief of Naval Operations .
Since the ranks of Vice Admiral and Admiral in the US armed forces are only assigned temporarily, the officer must hold an appropriate position. If they fail to do so, they must retire or be demoted within 60 days. If the government has designated an officer for a position that is not yet vacant, it must “park” him in an appropriate post. Admirals who need to be "parked" for later use are often used as Vice Chiefs of Staff of their armed forces or as commanding general of the US Southern Command .
