Tongaat is a city in the South African metropolitan municipality eThekwini . She is known for making sugar. Tongaat is located at an altitude of 134 meters on the Tongati River , which is also the namesake of the city. Durban is about 37 kilometers south. In 2011 Tongaat had 42,554 inhabitants.

The place was founded in 1945 to provide living space for the workers in the sugar cane cultivation and sugar industry. The first Indian community on the territory of South Africa was established in Tongaat . There are two Hindu temples for them . One of the largest African sugar and starch producers, Tongaat Hulett Ltd. The company has offices in six countries in the South African development community , including Mozambique , Swaziland and Zimbabwe . In addition to the central sugar refinery in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal has four other company-owned sugar processing sites.
