Carl Magnus von Schwerin (born December 24, 1715 in Stolpe on Usedom , † January 18, 1775 in Liegnitz ) was a Prussian major general , chief of infantry regiment No. 43 and knight of the Pour le Mérite .

Life

origin

He came from the Pomeranian aristocratic Schwerin family . His parents were Johann Heinrich von Schwerin (* August 12, 1678; † December 15, 1724) on Stolpe and heir to Usedom and Johanna Elisabeth von Horn (1673-1730), a daughter of Major General Magnus Friedrich von Horn . The district administrator Erdmann Friedrich von Schwerin was his brother.

Career

On April 19, 1727 he came to the royal pages in Berlin. On August 20, 1728, however, he became a flagjunker in Infantry Regiment No. 16 (Flanß). Because of his youth, he was transferred to the Cadet Corps in Berlin on February 10, 1729, in order to acquire the necessary scientific knowledge there.

On May 30, 1737 he was ensign in Infantry Regiment No. 26 (Kleist), in 1740 he was Second Lieutenant and on July 15, 1745 Premier Lieutenant. From 1741 he fought in the First Silesian War , where he was wounded six times on April 10, 1741 in the Battle of Mollwitz . It was not until 1744 that the regiment returned to battle. In Tabor he came in 1744 in captivity, he was soon replaced again. Due to his achievements he received a grenadier company in the regiment (Margrave Heinrich) in 1750 without ever having been a staff captain . In the Seven Years' War he was in the siege of Prague and the battle of Kolin . He received eleven wounds in the battle and was taken prisoner. After being substituted, he was no longer considered fit for the field. He therefore became major and commandant of Driesen in October 1757 . This was where his practical test came on July 10, 1758, when the Russian general Demikof attacked the place. After a second attack, he had to retreat to Landsberg an der Warthe .

After his final recovery he was given a grenadier battalion, which was formed from the grenadier companies of regiments No. 12 and No. 25 (von Möllendorf). With this he was sent to the relief of Kolberg in 1760. There he was able to acquire the order Pour le Mérite . He stayed in the fortress, which he also helped defend in 1761. On January 20, 1761 he became lieutenant colonel and in December 1761 commander in regiment No. 47 (Grabow). On May 22, 1764 he became a colonel, on June 7, 1767 Chief of Infantry Regiment No. 21 (pods) and on August 3, 1767 Major General.

The Hereditary Prince of Braunschweig, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand , entered Prussian service in 1773, wanted a regiment close to his home and received the regiment of Schwerin. In return, Carl Magnus von Schwerin received the Fusilier Regiment No. 43 (Krokow) in Liegnitz . He died there in 1775.
