The upper Oetternbach in the nature reserve

The Oetternbach (also "Ötternbach"), in the upper reaches of Röhrentruperbach , is a 16.7 km long orographically left tributary of the Bega in the northeast of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The Oetternbach got its name from the Otter . This lived until 1572, when the last otter was caught in Heiden , on the Oetternbach. The otter was often hunted because of its thick fur and the otter fat, which was valued in folk medicine at the time.

geography

course

The Oetternbach rises at 195  m above sea level. NHN at the foot of the 260 meter high Mönkeberg . Immediately after its source, it flows through the Oetterteich and flows south. The stream reaches the northern outskirts of Detmold and thus the district of Klüt , from where it turns first briefly to the west and then to the northwest. It reaches the urban area of Lagens , flows south past Heiden and east past Lage and, after a total length of 16.7 km, joins the Bega on the left.

Tributaries

The Oetternbach has several tributaries, which are viewed from the source below:

  • Klüterbach: 1.591 km long, left tributary

environment

According to a survey of water quality data from 2001, the Oetternbach is assigned to water quality class III. This means that the stream is critically polluted. More recent studies from 2008 show an improved quality situation. The upper and lower reaches of the Oetternbach are assigned to water quality class II. The middle course between the confluence of the Sylbecke and the Fellenbach has poorer water quality and is classified as class II-III (critically polluted).

In July 2006 fish died in the Oetternbach. This was caused by pollution of the stream with large amounts of manure.

Protected areas

In the area of Oetternbachs and its surrounding region, the three a total of about 300 in 2006 and 2,009 hectares large protected areas " Oetternbach " been expelled.

The “ Hardisser Moor ” nature reserve is marked north of Hardissen along the Oetternbach stream .
