Course of the Bega

The Bega ( Low German : Biege ) is a 43.9 km long orographically right or eastern tributary of the Werre , a left tributary of the Weser . It flows in the Lipper Bergland in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . Its catchment area covers 376.7 km².

Surname

The name of the Bega was first mentioned in a document in 1345 as “twisschen der Beghe”, and for 1405 “up de south der Beghe”, then at the beginning of the 17th century as “Die Bege”, “bey der Bege” (1614), in die Bege ”,“ die Bege up ”(1635). Documents from the early 13th century (and others in the following centuries) are associated with the place name Bega . The meaning of the name goes back to the Germanic form * baki- transparent for “Bach”. Old Saxon and Low German derivatives, especially in the Lippe dialect, are the forms beki , beke , bi (e) ke . The spellings of the older and oldest document forms with -g- and -gh- stand for a shifted Germanic -k- to -ch- as the central German forms * bechi , beche show.

course

Bega through Lemgo

The Bega rises in the eastern part of the Teutoburg Forest / Eggegebirge nature park, southeast of the city center of Barntrup . Its source is in the northern part of the Blomberger Stadtwald between the nearby Steinberg ( 281.6  m above sea  level ) in the northwest and the Birkenberg ( 296.2  m above sea level ) in the south at around 238  m above sea level. NN .

Initially, the Bega, which runs mainly in an east-southeast-west-north-west direction, flows north parallel to the course of federal highway 1 . After a few kilometers of the river , roughly at the level of Oesterröden, the river turns west and first flows south past Barntrup and then through the west-southwestern districts.

Then the Bega passes the church village Bega of the municipality Dörentrup , touches the Dörentruper district Humfeld in the south, passes the Wendlinghausen locality Sporkholz in the south and the Dörentruper Kernort in the north.

On Lemgo city the Bega takes north of the district Voßheide the Passade and flows through the Lemgoer nucleus. After confluence with the Ilse coming from the north, it touches the Lieme district to the south , where the Oetternbach flows from the south .

From here the Bega flows in a north-westerly direction and flows through the Bad Salzuflen districts Grastrup-Hölsen and Schötmar , to the south-west of the Bad Salzuflen town center, after taking in the salts flowing in from the north , at the Werre river kilometer 30.3 in the one coming from there from the south Weser tributary Werre at about 71  m above sea level. NN to flow .

River system

At the confluence with the Werre in Bad Salzuflen, the Bega carries more water with an average of 4.6 m³ / s than the Werre with an average discharge of 2.9 m³ / s. The main strand of the Werre river system runs over them . In addition, up to this point the Bega has covered a longer flow distance of 43.9 km than the Werre with 41.6 km.

environment

In the upper reaches the Bega meanders strongly and is in a near-natural condition. In addition to extensive beech stocks and other spring areas, there are rare plants and animals. Therefore, in 1996 the Begatal was placed under nature protection.

It comprises the approximately 21 km long stretch of water and valley area of the Bega with a size of 497  hectares from the source areas in the Blomberger Stadtwald to Brake Castle in Lemgo. The Bega is moderately polluted almost in its entire course and is therefore  assigned to water quality class II. Only between the Lemgo industrial park west of the city center and the mouth of the Ilse is the water quality somewhat worse. The Bega shows itself to be critically polluted here (water quality class II-III).

Flood protection

Rapid, violent floods can occur at the Bega. Therefore, a flood retention basin with a storage capacity of 2,582,000 m³ was created in 1997 southeast of Bad Salzuflen . It holds back water from a 294 km² catchment area and is intended to protect Bad Salzuflen and Schötmar from flooding .

tourism

The Brake Castle , built in the Weser Renaissance style, and the mill museum there are nearby .
