The contiguous areas of Oetternbach are three nature reserves designated by the Detmold regional council (NSG number LIP – 083, –087 and –099) in the North Rhine-Westphalian cities of Detmold , Lage and Lemgo in the Lippe district in Germany .

The total of around 300 hectares (ha) (187.32 hectares (Detmold), 105.51 hectares (Lage), 5.50 hectares (Lemgo)) large nature conservation areas of Oetternbach belong naturally to the Lipper Bergland . They extend along the eponymous Oetternbach .

The Oettetbach rises at the foot of the Mönkeberg near the Barkhausen district of Detmold , flows south from there, reaches the Klüt district of Detmold , turns from there first briefly to the west and then to the northwest. It reaches the urban area of Lagens , flows south past Heiden and east past Lage and joins the Bega on the left in the Lemgo district of Lieme .

The protected areas of Oetternbach are described as areas “worthy of protection and endangered flowing water with spring streams and near-natural spring meadows, alluvial forests, sand and gravel banks, alder forests adjacent to the stream, moor and swamp forests, endangered deciduous forests from mixed oak forests rich in old and dead wood, and wetlands rich in sedge”.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is the "preservation, development and restoration of a regionally to nationally significant, near-natural stream including its floodplain and adjacent woody structures as a habitat for rare, endangered and typical wild flora and fauna species".
