Joan Chandler (born August 24, 1923 in Butler , Pennsylvania as Joan Cheeseman , † May 11, 1979 in New York City ) was an American actress .

life and career

Joan Chandler was born Joan Cheeseman in Pennsylvania, where her family ran a rental car company. She had two sisters. The brunette actress first attracted attention with her film debut in the drama Humoresque alongside Joan Crawford and John Garfield . In 1947 she was a founding member of the famous Actors Studio . Two years later, Chandler was the leading lady in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Cocktail for a Corpse . She embodied the elegant girlfriend of a murder victim with whom her boyfriend's murderers play nasty intrigues. Cocktail for a corpse remained her last film, after which she only had guest appearances in a few television series. She played in five plays on Broadway , but without achieving a breakthrough as an actress. She probably retired from acting around 1962.

Joan Chandler was married twice, first to David McKay and in later years to Dr. Charles C. Hogan. Both marriages ended in divorce. She died of cancer in 1979 at the age of 55.
