Oil pastels are solids that, when rubbed in, produce strong, opaque colors that, like oil paints , can be smeared into fine, transparent color gradients. In addition to fillers and color pigments, in contrast to pastels, they contain significant amounts of oil and wax . In addition, binders are often added to improve mechanical stability.

The colors of the oil pastels adhere to almost all surfaces and do not need to be fixed, but are difficult to correct and cannot be erased. They are not water-soluble, but can be painted with turpentine or gasoline and mixed dry. Oil pastels become soft at temperatures above 50 ° C.
