After Mercury had already named the two- and four-door Fastback versions of Monterey , Montclair and Park Lane with the additional designation Marauder from spring 1963 to autumn 1966 , the plant introduced the Marauder as an independent model series for the 1969 model year.

The Marauder was part of the full-size model family from Mercury, but it rested on the platform of the station wagon, which had been shortened by 7.5 cm in the wheelbase and was only available as a two-door hardtop coupé with its own hatchback roofline. The front section with pop-up headlights came from the Marquis. Two variants were available, a basic version with a standard 6.4-liter V8 (269 SAE PS / 198 kW) and a sports version called the Marauder X-100 with a 7-liter V8 (365 SAE PS / 268 kW), more enriched Equipment, two-tone paintwork and rear fender covers.

In 1970 the basic engine of the Marauder was a throttled version of the seven-liter V8 (324 SAE-PS / 238 kW).

After that, the Marauder was given up due to poor sales. A total of 20,709 copies were produced in two years.

In the fall of 2002, Mercury launched another Marauder, this time a four-door sedan. This reflects the trend of the 1990s, when coupes went out of style in favor of (more practical) sedan models. The second Marauder was a sister model of Ford's Panther platform series, namely the Ford Crown Victoria , the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Lincoln Town Car .

For the 2003 model year, the entire series, especially under the sheet metal, underwent a significant change, from which the new sports model, the Marauder, also benefited.

The Marauder has been recognized by Ford as a Limited Edition since 2009 , and a certificate of verification can be issued by Ford on request.

particularities

  • The engine was the 4.6-l V8 of the modular series in the 4-valve version, also known as Intech . In fact, this was the same engine as in the Ford Mustang Mach 1 (2003 + 2004) built at the same time . The engine developed 225 kW (306 hp) at 6000 rpm. At the rear there was a rather generous double exhaust system in chrome-plated stainless steel. The 4-speed automatic transmission including converter was adapted to the engine.
  • The chassis received the light alloy axle of the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, i.e. the reinforced version of the police version. In the back there was an electronically controlled air suspension with Tokico dampers, which was specially mounted outside the frame for faster response. Marauder also had its own 18-inch wheels with the Merkur head emblem.
  • In the interior there were special Marauder seats with the embossed emblem of the god Mercury ("Mercury"), white instrument displays (engine speed, speed, tank, temperature) and additional aluminum displays for oil and electrical voltage in the center console. The (artificial) wood applications of the Grand Marquis were exchanged for variants in the carbon style. The automatic selector lever and the steering wheel with remote control elements were made of black leather. The front floor mats were embroidered with “Marauder” in silver.
  • Exterior colors: model year 2003 only black, 2004 also burgundy red, silver and blue. Leather interior colors: black ( dark charcoal ) and flint ( light flint )
  • Parts of the reflective surfaces in the clear glass headlights were specially framed in black. The taillights corresponded to those of the Crown Victoria. The front turn signals / side markers had their own (black) design with integrated cornering lights .
  • The list of options that could be ordered was very short because of the lavish basic equipment. It was only possible to add a CD changer , heated seats , a sunroof and a trunk organizer.

Production numbers

Due to the moderate success, production was discontinued at the end of 2004. In total, only 11,052 copies were produced in two years.
