The Mariner was introduced in autumn 2004. The mechanics are identical to the Ford Escape, although the Mercury was only available with an automatic transmission. External stylistic differences were e.g. B. a two-tone interior and the typical Mercury "waterfall" grille with emblem. The Mariner presented Mercury's first SUV based on a car and is positioned below the Mountaineer in the model range .
Hybrid
From the beginning of 2006 the Mariner was also available as a hybrid. The mechanics were similar to its sister model Ford Escape Hybrid . Both models are full hybrid versions, which means that they can be operated either purely electrically, only with a gasoline engine or with both engines together. Switching takes place automatically in order to achieve the best performance and efficiency at any speed and load. When braking or stopping, the energy is converted back into electricity, with the electric motor acting as a generator and charging the batteries. With 155 bhp (114 kW) the Mariner Hybrid accelerates almost as fast as the conventionally powered Mariner with 200 bhp (147 kW) V6 engine.
Presidential execution
On September 7, 2006, Ford delivered a special "presidential version" of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid to former US President Bill Clinton . The equipment includes:
- LED lighting
- 110 V socket
- Rear single seats
- Fold-out desks in the center console and on the rear seats
- DVD player at every seat
- fridge
- Enlarged rear seat space
There are also quite a few unpublished safety features on this vehicle.

The second generation of the Mariner was presented at the South Florida International Auto Show on October 6, 2006 and was intended to reflect a new direction for the Mercury brand. It went on sale at the end of 2007.
The Mariner received extensive modifications, but was still based on the Ford CD2 platform . The bodywork revisions include a higher waistline, new doors and wheels, new headlights and taillights, and a new tailgate. The interior has been significantly improved with new seats, higher quality materials and better equipment details. The engine range remained unchanged, but the 3.0-liter Duratec V6 was revised to such an extent that it consumes 10% less fuel.
At the end of 2010, production of the Mariner ran out due to the discontinuation of the Mercury brand.
marketing
The Mariner, like all other contemporary Mercury models, was only offered in the United States, Mexico, and Tanzania.
