The Mazda Tribute was the first SUV model from the Japanese car manufacturer Mazda . In January 2000, the Tribute was presented at the Los Angeles Auto Show and came onto the German market in September of the same year. It was developed in close cooperation with the then parent company Ford , whereby it not only shared the technical basis, but also the essential parts of the body with the Ford Escape / Mercury Mariner . The engine range was also identical for the models. In 2006, sales across Europe were discontinued. In Asia, the car was still offered with a slightly modified body. The Mazda Tribute was much more successful in the USA than in Europe, which is why a completely new model was launched there in 2007. This second generation again shared the technology and floor pan with the Ford Escape and was produced until 2012.

Facelift

Mazda Tribute (2004-2008)

In the summer of 2004, the Tribute was given a slight facelift , in which the headlights , rear lights , the bumpers , front and rear aprons and the interior were revised. New features included standard 16-inch alloy wheels, exterior mirrors painted in the vehicle color, flared fenders and an upgraded center console and gearshift lever in the interior .

The safety equipment now also included two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger as well as head-shoulder airbags at the front and rear. Protection for the rear passengers now offered three headrests and automatic seat belts on all seats. In addition to front and rear disc brakes , there was ABS as standard with electronic brake force distribution and mechanical brake assist . In addition, all models were now available exclusively with all-wheel drive, which switched the power electromagnetically to the rear axle when required.

Production ended in early 2008.

Engines

Since the Mazda Tribute was mainly developed for the USA, it is powered exclusively by gasoline engines, as these are more popular in America:

In the USA, the 2.0-liter engine produced four kW more.

With the facelift in summer 2004, the engines were also revised. The 2.0 l was replaced by the 2.3 l and the V6 was boosted by four kW. In addition, the smaller engine now meets the Euro 4 emissions standard .

Registration numbers

Between 2001 and 2007, 11,084 Mazda Tributes were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany.

The second generation of the Tribute was introduced in North America in 2008. Like its predecessor, it is based on the Ford Escape. Both conventional gasoline engines and a hybrid drive consisting of gasoline and electric motors were available.

Production ended in 2012. The Mazda CX-5 was introduced as the successor .

Tribute HEV

From 2007 the Mazda Tribute HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) based on the second generation of the Tribute was offered. The SUV with hybrid drive is a sister model of the Ford Escape Hybrid and achieves a system output of 114 kW (155 PS) with the combined power of the gasoline and electric motor . The 2.3 liter four-cylinder petrol engine from the MZR series develops 98 kW (133 hp) at 6000 rpm.

The technology is based on the first model of the Toyota Prius . The DOHC 16-valve engine works according to the Atkinson cycle - valve control in which the intake valves close very late and part of the mixture is then returned to the intake tract. This method improves the efficiency , but has the disadvantage of a relatively low torque in the lower speed range. As part of a hybrid drive, however, this handicap can be compensated for by the 70 kW (94 PS) electric drive. In the case of vigorous acceleration maneuvers, it provides the required additional thrust and also takes over the function of the starter and generator.

The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h roughly as fast as a conventional SUV with a V6 engine and 147 kW (200 hp), but at the same time uses up to 75 percent less gasoline in the city cycle. This model was not offered in Europe.
