The Mazda 818 was a mid-range car that Mazda manufactured in Japan from 1971 to 1978. Together with the models 1000 , 1500/1800 and 616 , it was one of the first models that Mazda offered in Europe. In other markets, the car was introduced as Mazda Familia (USA, Japan) or Mazda 808 (USA, Australia, New Zealand). Mazda had previously used the Familia model name for the 800 and 1000 models, and it was later to adorn the 323 as well . Since the Mazda 1000 and Mazda 818 were in the model range at the same time in some markets, the 818 model was referred to as the Grand Familia for the sake of differentiation .

The car was initially available as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupé. In Europe it had the same four-cylinder OHC in-line engine with a displacement of 1,586 cc and 75 hp (55 kW) as the 616 , which made it well-powered at the time. The engine power was transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual four-speed gearbox with center shift and a cardan shaft.

In 1976 the first facelift was due. The most important change for Europe was the new engine with a capacity of 1,272 cm³ and 60 HP (44 kW), which could be ordered instead of the 1.6-liter R4 engine (initially still available). Cosmetic changes included round headlights instead of the previous rectangular headlights, minor retouching on the bodywork, and rims in a new design. As an additional body variant , a 5-door station wagon was offered under the name Variabel . The sedan with a 1.3-liter R4 engine could be ordered with a three-speed automatic if desired.

From 1972 to 1978 the Mazda 818 was offered in all body variants with a twin-disc rotary engine and modified body front as the RX-3 . This model variant was not available in all markets and was sold in Japan, the USA, Australia and New Zealand under the model name Savanna .

In 1977 the 1.6-liter engine was discontinued for the sedan in Germany. In 1978 production ceased and in July 1979 the last Mazda 818 was delivered in Germany, so that the 323 , which had been produced since 1977, was now the smallest Mazda model on the German market. The 818 Coupé or RX-3 Coupé received a successor with the new Mazda RX-7 , the sedan was replaced by the new Mazda 626 and the station wagon was replaced by the new Mazda 929 .
