The Mazda RX-5 (name in Japan Mazda Cosmo AP or Mazda Cosmo L , in some markets Mazda 121 L ) was a two-door mid-range coupé produced from June 1975 to December 1981 by the Japanese car manufacturer Mazda with a rotary engine . At the same time, a version of this vehicle with a 1.8 l 4-cylinder in-line engine with an output of 64 kW was also offered under the model name "Mazda 121".
The RX-5 was technically based on the Mazda RX-4 , but, unlike this one, had a rear multi-link axle and rear disc brakes.
The model was offered both as a notchback coupé with a Landau vinyl roof in the style of contemporary American coupés (Cosmo L) and with a hinted hatchback and a window integrated in the B-pillar (Cosmo AP). Only the latter variant was available in Germany.
The Wankel version of the RX-5 was powered by a two-disc Wankel engine with 1208 or 1316 cm³ chamber volume with 82 kW or 80 kW (engine types 12A or 13B).
A revised RX-5 was introduced in mid-1979. However, due to weak demand, it was no longer exported.
In late 1981, the RX-5 was discontinued in favor of the Mazda RX-7 .
