The Mazda Bongo Friendee was a minibus based on the Mazda SG platform . In addition to the 7/8 seat minibus, it was also offered as a 6-person camper van. The curb weight is given as 1600–1940 kg. Ford sold it as Ford Freda as part of badge engineering . Both models were only offered in Asia and Oceania and occasionally imported to Great Britain (island) . It wasn't until 2008 that there was a successor model with the Mazda Biante .
In June 1995 the production of the Friendee and Ford Freda began. It was powered either by a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter V6 petrol engine. A 2.5-liter turbo-diesel was used as the diesel engine, which was also installed in the Ford Ranger . In principle, the vehicle had rear-wheel drive and could optionally be ordered with all-wheel drive . In addition to the standard 5-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic transmission was also available as an option. The van had 7 seats as standard. It had a large central sunroof as standard . A version with camping equipment was also offered ex works . The greatest special feature of this car was the standard electric lifting roof called "Auto Free Top" , which was manufactured by Daikyo Webasto (now Webasto Japan). A total of 5 people could sleep in the vehicle. All versions of the Friendee / Freda had folding seats that could be folded into a double bed.
- In February 1999 there was a revision with a new front. In addition to detailed improvements, the passenger compartment was also revised so that there was now space for 8 people in the van and 6 people in the camping model.
- In December 2005 production was stopped.
