The Mazda MX-3 (Code: EC) is a four-seater sports coupé with front-wheel drive, self-supporting body, large tailgate and 289 liters of luggage space. The basis is the platform of the Mazda 323 . Debut in the MX-3 at the IAA Frankfurt 1991. Abroad, the model under various names was offered: In North America , it was named Mazda MX-3 Precidia , in Japan and other markets, it was considered Eunos Presso or Autozam AZ-3 sold . The model caused a sensation, among other things, because it was available with the smallest six-cylinder engine at the time (only 1.85 liter displacement / free-running ).
The vehicle is 4.22 m long, the wheelbase is 2.46 m, the track width is 1,460 mm at the front and 1,465 mm at the rear. The wheels are individually suspended on MacPherson struts and wishbones , two lower wishbones and a trailing arm are installed at the rear ("Twin Trapezoidal Link", TTL), a similar suspension is used by Lancia. The rear suspension is designed to be flexible and should ensure good cornering behavior by going into toe-in when there is lateral force. The V6 model was equipped with a rear spoiler. Initially, the MX-3 was available in Germany with two engines:
- as a 1.6-l SOHC -16 V four-cylinder gasoline engine with 65 kW (88 PS)
- and with 1,845 cm³ displacement as a V6 engine with 98 kW (133 hp) and 157 Nm torque; the engine block is made of aluminum, its cylinder bank angle is 60 °. With a displacement of 2.0 l, this engine was installed in the Mazda Xedos 6 . Both engines of the MX-3 had a five-speed gearbox as a manual switch.
From 1994, the facelift model was equipped with ABS , four disc brakes (257 mm internally ventilated at the front; 251 mm at the rear), driver and front passenger airbags and side impact protection. The interior received a redesigned dashboard with round air outlets, the front seats were changed and the window lifters, like the exterior mirrors and the sunroof, which are subject to a surcharge, are now electrically operated (except for the special Youngster model , which was available without ABS and airbags).
The engines have also been modified (emission standards from 1994 Euro 1 (E2), from 1996 Euro 2):
- the four-cylinder with 16 valves became a DOHC engine with 79 kW (107 PS)
- the six-cylinder with 24 valves now developed 95 kW (129 hp). All engines had a toothed belt.
At the end of 1994, sales of the car in the USA were discontinued, and in 1996 also in Canada. Production stopped in autumn 1996. In Europe and Asia, the coupé was sold until 1998. Total sales in Germany add up to around 20,000 pieces.

Performance
Above all, the version with the V6 engine, whose speed limit is 7,000 rpm, has comparatively good driving characteristics in view of the engine power, also due to the low vehicle weight, the low center of gravity and the short stepped five-speed transmission, which has a top speed of 202 km / h and enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.5 seconds. The V6 takes 16.8 s for the 'quarter mile'.
The four-cylinder versions with a five-speed gearbox accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 10.5 s and reach around 180 km / h.
