Camuffo rear axle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Camuffo rear axle is an independent suspension of the rear wheels for motor vehicles .

It consists of three rod cores and a wheel-guiding MacPherson strut per wheel . Two handlebars are transverse and one is installed lengthways. In contrast to the Chapman axle from Lotus and the axle with shock absorber struts and transverse leaf spring used in front-wheel drive Fiats ( 128 , 127 and following), all links on the Camuffo axle are independent of each other. In this respect it is similar to the rear suspension of the Fiat 130 from 1969, which was also developed by Sergio Camuffo .

history

The Camuffo rear axle was designed by Sergio Camuffo as part of the development of the Lancia Beta , which was launched with this suspension system in 1972.

In its first version, the stabilizer simultaneously took on the task of the compression and tension strut for guiding in the longitudinal direction. Until 1975 this stabilizer tension strut was attached to the rear steering knuckle of the Lancia Beta via a ball joint . From 1975 a silent socket was used at this point.

From 1976 the first version of the Camuffo rear axle was found in the Lancia Gamma as well as in the Lancia Beta .

In the second version of the axle from 1979 onwards, Lancia decoupled the tension struts and the stabilizer and used separate components for this. This version was first used in the Lancia Delta , then in the Lancia Prisma , Lancia Thema and Lancia Kappa . This axle was also used for other vehicles from the FIAT group, such as the Fiat Croma , Alfa Romeo 164 , Alfa Romeo 156 , Alfa Romeo 147 and Alfa Romeo GT . However, the guidance of the stabilizer has been fundamentally changed for the Lancia Kappa and Alfa Romeo 156, Alfa Romeo 147 and Alfa Romeo GT models. Here the stabilizer was moved to the rear axle carrier and connected to the MacPherson strut via pendulum supports .

The concept of the Camuffo rear axle was also copied at an early stage by many manufacturers outside the FIAT group, including the Mazda 626 and Toyota Celica .

The Lancia Delta (HF4WD and Integrale) was rally world champion six times in a row from 1987 to 1992 with a Camuffo rear axle.

The Camuffo rear axle is one of the first series-produced multi-link rear axles . The multi-link axle from Mercedes from 1981 onwards had two upper links instead of a MacPherson strut.
