The Mazda Carol is a small car in the Japanese kei car class and replaced the Autozam Carol in 1998 . From 1962 to 1970 there was a similar range from Mazda with the Mazda Carol P360 , which was replaced by the Mazda Chantez in 1972 . Since Mazda could not implement its ideas in the kei car segment with the Chantez, they withdrew from it in 1976 after the end of the Chantez. Only through the cooperation with Suzuki via Autozam did they return in 1989 with the Autozam Carol. After the Autozam project was discontinued in 1998, Mazda has again been offering a model in the Kei-Car class with the Carol under its own brand name. However, this is a slightly modified contemporary Suzuki Alto using badge engineering .

The Mazda Carol is a mini car ( kei car ) with three or five doors that is tax-privileged in Japan . Sales began on October 13, 1998. The Carol is largely identical to the Suzuki Alto to reduce costs . It is available with front-wheel drive as standard, a version with all-wheel drive was available at an additional cost . At the beginning of sales it was available with the Suzuki F6A gasoline engine, which has 657 cc and an overhead camshaft. A four-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic transmission was optionally available. The equipment includes an anti-lock braking system , front and side airbags , power steering , heated rear window, immobilizer and central locking . In contrast to the Alto, the Carol was not available as a special two-seater, but only with 4 seats.
From January 1999 there was the Suzuki K6A engine with two overhead camshafts, 658 cm³ displacement and gasoline direct injection in the Carol SG with more comfortable equipment. From October 1999 there were minor changes to the design and the interior and a start-stop system . Coupled with a lean-burn version of the K6A was a continuously variable transmission in the Carol Miredi-L . The Miredi-S was the K6A with VVT-i control, now with a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The Carol FUN2 Edition special models with the keyless entry system were available from May 2000 . In December of the same year, the front was extended and the new five-point radiator grille was integrated. At the same time, the F6A engine was omitted, the 3-speed automatic transmission and a 5-speed manual transmission replaced the 4-speed transmission. There were no more technical changes until the end of sales in August 2004.

The model change of the Alto in September 2004 also brought a new Carol model. The Carol differed from the Alto by a different radiator grille and brand emblems. Only a 5-door version with 4 seats was available. Also known was the revised K6A engine with now 54 HP (40 kW), as it was also installed in Europe in the Alto and Suzuki Wagon R + . There was no longer a CVT transmission, but in addition to the 5-speed manual transmission there was a 3- or 4-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive was also optionally available again instead of just front-wheel drive.
In addition to the series standard of its predecessor, most recently with power windows in front, as a variant Carol G , there was also the Carol X . This also had an exterior package with black painted fenders, aluminum wheels and halogen fog lights. Among them there was a Carol E with the simplest equipment for commercial use. Special models of the Carol G followed later, such as the G Spezial with tinted rear window and rear windows, aluminum wheels and electrically folding exterior mirrors, as well as the Carol GII with additional electrically adjustable front seats. In 2007 the G Spezial was added to the range as its own Carol Grade equipment line . In December 2007 there was a facelift on the front with a new bumper and new seat and door panels. The Carol E became the Pino in response to its new sister model, the Nissan Pixo . From 2009 the Carol was only available with a 4-speed automatic transmission in all versions until the end of sales in November 2009.

Again as a 5-door with 4 seats and the 658 cm³ petrol engine with a Jatco CVT gearbox, 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-speed automatic gearbox (only with all-wheel drive) the new Carol was available from December 2009. Compared to its predecessor, the model grew in height and wheelbase, while the weight was reduced by 10 kg. This and a revised valve control made it possible to reduce fuel consumption with the same output of 54 hp. Thanks to the larger wheelbase, the distance between the seats has been increased.
Compared to its predecessor, the basic Carol GS model is also equipped with a keyless entry system and a start button. A brake assistant with EBD was added to the safety equipment. ESP is also available as an option. Since May 2010 there is also the Carol G4 with a split rear seat that can be lowered into the floor. In June 2012, the 4-speed automatic transmission was discontinued, as the CVT transmission is now also compatible with all-wheel drive.

The new Carol was presented for the 2015 model year together with the almost identical Suzuki Alto . Instead of the more modern design language of its predecessor, the sixth generation now uses isolated retro elements. The tailgate extends across the entire width of the vehicle, while the rear lights are located in the bumper below. The window line on the rear doors shows a noticeable bend upwards and the front is characterized by large, trapezoidal lights. Instead of a conventional radiator grille, there are only four vertical slots to the left of the brand logo.
The Carol is available with front or all-wheel drive . A 660 cm³ three-cylinder is used as the drive source, the power of which is transmitted by a manual or optionally via a continuously variable transmission . The most economical version of the Carol achieves consumption values of around 2.7 l / 100 km. Prices start at 847,800 yen .
