The Mazda Furai (Japanese: 風 籟, Fūrai "sound of the wind") was a concept vehicle from the Japanese automaker Mazda , which was presented in January 2008 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit .
The Furai was the fifth model in the Nagare concept vehicle line manufactured by Mazda since 2006. The chassis was based on the Le Mans prototype C65 of Courage Compétition , the Mazda last two years before in the American Le Mans Series was used and the Furai was with a new 3-disc Wankel engine (bhp 450, 335 kW) equipped that was equipped for the use of bioethanol . The rotary engine and the trochoidal muffler were developed by Racing Beat , a tuner for rotary engines based on the 20B . The engine was not completely redesigned.
The car carried the number 55 of its predecessor 787B , which won the 1991 Le Mans 24-hour race . Unlike many other concept vehicles, the Furai is fully functional and has been tested on various racetracks, for example in Laguna Seca and Buttonwillow .
On August 19, 2008, the Furai prototype was completely destroyed by fire during a test drive by the testers of the Top Gear car show .
