The Sentia was developed in line with the planned Mazda flagship Amati 1000 . It was assumed that the Amati would take on the role of the luxury sedan (e.g. chauffeur vehicles) in the product range and developed the first Sentia more for private customers, recognizable by its Jaguar-like appearance, its relatively low roof line and the fact that the design placed more emphasis on the external appearance than on the enlargement of the interior space. In some markets the Sentia was also marketed as the Mazda 929 .

The Sentia was touted by Mazda as a "front mid-engined car" because the V6 engine is behind the front axle and the tank is above the rear axle. In this version, the Sentia also had Mazda's new speed - dependent all-wheel steering for the first time . At speeds below 35 km / h, the rear wheels turned in the opposite direction to the front wheels in order to reduce the turning circle. At higher speeds, the rear wheels steered in the same direction as the front wheels to improve driving stability.

The solar ventilation system is a device in which amorphous solar cells in the sunroof supply the electrical energy for fans in the trunk, which cool the interior when the car is parked in the sun. This system was later found on the Mazda Xedos 9 .

There were two engines to choose from. Both were developed from previous Mazda V6 machines and do not match those of the aluminum KL series used on the 626 and Xedos 6 .

The 1995 Sentia was built on the revised Mazda HE platform and was the last large right-hand drive Mazda sedan.

Most of the mechanics have been adopted from the previous model. Outside and inside, the Sentia has been slightly redesigned and made more stately for use as a state limousine. It got a larger grille, a higher roof line for more headroom and a large number of real wood panels.

The ad campaign featured Sean Connery saying the car was "... apt!"

The second generation of the Sentia had the following engines:

  • 3.0 l-V6, type JE-ZE, 160 bhp (118 kW)
  • 3.0 l-V6, type JE-ZE. 200 bhp (147 kW)
