In May 2011, the second generation of the Kia Picanto appeared in Europe , including Kia Morning ( Hangeul : 기아 모닝), the four-seater ( five -seater in the import version ) small car with hatchback from the South Korean automaker KIA Motors . Initially as a five-door, which was followed in autumn by the three-door, available for the first time.

The vehicle is produced in Seosan, South Korea, by the contract manufacturer Donghee Auto. The publication of the vehicle details on the website www.picantoleaks.de was used as a marketing hook. The page is stylistically based on the WikiLeaks disclosure platform . In terms of content, the origin of the colors is ironically "revealed" (volcanic rock from Eyjafjallajökull for the color Volcano Black), and the tank also contains CO 2 -absorbing nanorobots.

Although it does not achieve the best values, the standard consumption of 4.4 l / 100 km is actually half a liter below the average value for comparable engines in small cars that have appeared since 2010. The fuel consumption-increasing effect of larger bikes is also shown for the first time. The top-of-the-line 15 "aluminum rims therefore consume 0.2 liters more than the 14 and 13-inch rims. The reason for this is the larger rotating masses ( see cause ), which are particularly important when braking and accelerating a 10-inch tire halves the tire-related consumption. However, such sizes require an adapted vehicle design, conceivably for future electric vehicles.

landing gear

The chassis was rated as one of the vehicle's strengths in first-generation reviews, which is why its concept was retained. At the front, a higher caster angle is supposed to stabilize straight-line stability, at the rear the trailing arm bushes have been enlarged for the purpose of greater stability. To reduce the tendency to understeer , the rear axle is now 60 percent tighter. The springs have become softer all around and, thanks to shorter spring travel limiters, allow longer spring travel to accommodate the road conditions in big cities. The turning circle is now 15 cm smaller at 9.80 meters.

safety

The manufacturer describes the outdated security of the first generation as one of their weak points. The reason for this was the focus at the time on cost-reducing production. The second generation therefore includes curtain airbags for the first time, as well as - only in the top European equipment - a driver's knee airbag. A premiere in the small car segment that follows the world's first knee airbag in the Sportage in 1994. However, neither its successor nor other models from the manufacturer followed this example - up to the Picanto. The driver's door window regulator and the optional glass roof now received anti-trap protection. In the event of emergency braking, the brake lights also flash three times. All vehicles with ESP also have rear disc brakes. However, the ESP is only available as an option from the medium-sized version. Two months after the three-door model was presented, it became mandatory for model premieres, and from November 2014 it must include every new registration. Active headrests in the front seats are only included in the top equipment. The developers were particularly hard-pressed to meet the stricter pedestrian protection in the EU NCAP test since 2010 . The steep, off-road vehicle-like front therefore contains an offset bonnet lock and is deformable in the area in front of the windshield. In addition, the lower cross member now initiates the rotation of the pedestrian to protect their knees. The body has been completely redesigned.

Euro NCAP

Adults: 86%

The Picanto lacks the fifth star due to its assistance systems, while occupant protection changes between “good” and “acceptable”. Exceptions are the rear impact and the chest area in the pole test . Here the car achieved "marginal" protection, the middle of the five rating levels. The rear impact sets it apart from the best in class protection; this is completed by the platform trio Seat Mii , Škoda Citigo and VW up! "Well". Like the Picanto, the test cars did not contain any active headrests.

The frontal test simulates two equally heavy vehicles with a speed of 55 km / h that collide on the driver's side. According to Euro NCAP, this covers half of real front-end collisions. However, the equilibrium reduces the informative value to one segment. For the growing proportion of lighter cars, tests with heavier models would be of interest, as would the load-bearing body parts that have not been considered up to now. These should support an arriving vehicle, distribute its load on the front of the vehicle, but avoid point loads. Such was the case with an SUV tested by the ADAC as an example , its steel girders mounted in the direction of travel pushed undeformed into the oncoming crumple zone. Such “incompatible” structures should lead to devaluation from 2015, the current test procedures are described by Euro NCAP as inadequate. The other NCAP tests are already comparable across all weight classes. For example, a small car-like barrier is always pushed sideways at 50 km / h against the supporting A and B-pillars of the vehicle. By 2015, this best-case situation will also be approximated to more conventional constellations in terms of actuarial statistics.

Children: 83%

Child safety is measured in the course of the above tests and largely achieved the best rating for the Picanto. The exception is the “3-year-old” dummy, whose chest area experiences medium loads in a frontal crash (9.6 out of 12 points). The Suzuki Alto and Fiat Panda received significantly fewer points ; Nissan Micra and the trio Mii , CitiGo and up! in the tested situations. The Picanto receives the highest number of points in the segment for seat attachment and instructions and thus offers the highest number of points for child protection of all small cars.

Pedestrians: 47%

The expenditure on the bumper design had an effect, but the rising bonnet offers little protection for pedestrians. The Nissan Micra offers more protection in the head area, the Suzuki Alto there and on the leg less protection. Otherwise, the Picanto is exactly the same as the other 2011 small cars. An adult and a child dummy were tested. With the tighter rating from 2012, 60% in this category will be a requirement for five stars.

Security assistants: 43%

Points are awarded to three security systems if the majority of them are installed. The ESP only appears in higher Picanto lines and is therefore no longer available, as is the speed limiter, which is not available across the segment. With this, a car signals a driver-defined maximum speed acoustically or actively prevents it from being exceeded. So only the seat belt reminders remain as a point source; every Picanto contains them all around. Other assistants, for example for changing lanes or keeping their distance, are not rewarded with points, but the “Beyond NCAP Award”. The VW up! for his city emergency brake assistant. Below 30 km / h it brakes the model in front of obstacles, below 20 km / h this can avoid collisions. It is available in the “drive pack plus” for 590 euros. The Euro NCAP suspects this in the majority of the model produced.

warranty

Like all European KIA models since 2010, the Picanto also comes with a seven-year manufacturer's guarantee, which is automatically transferred to subsequent owners. However, after the third year it is limited to 150,000 km. A prerequisite is also punctual and complete maintenance according to the manufacturer's specifications (see details ). The paint guarantee is five years, the one against rust perforation is now 12 years. However, as with all vehicles, the latter only covers very few cases of rust formation.

Engines

There are three engines: two petrol and that on petrol and with a LPG can be operated (LPG). This model has a 27-liter LPG tank that provides a range of over 400 km with standard consumption. Together with the 35-liter petrol tank, a range of well over 1,000 kilometers can be achieved. The LPG system is not a retrofit kit, but a factory-fitted equipment. A diesel engine is no longer offered (see Opel Agila ).

Design and equipment

The equipment was named by the manufacturer as a weak point of the first generation in addition to safety . However, the second edition should now even reach buyers of larger vehicle segments by offering their equipment features. The exterior designer Kee Hong Park implemented the drafts of the KIA chief designer Peter Schreyer . While the LED turn signals in the side mirrors and the LED daytime running lights and taillights, which are not available in Germany, serve to convey high quality, the switch from folding to chrome iron door handles is also intended to protect the fingernails of some customers. Due to its design, however, the three-door model in particular should also increasingly find male customers. In order to adapt the noise generation to the development goal, the bearings of the engine and transmission mounts were enlarged, the door seals were designed with two layers and the engine insulation with three layers. Outside, the mirrors now generate less turbulence, as does the antenna, which has been moved backwards.

The rear seat can be folded down in two parts (one 40% wide, the other 60% wide) and, as in the predecessor, cannot be moved forward to increase storage space. Only a few vehicles of this size offer this, including the Daihatsu Cuore and Fiat Panda . The trunk grew to 53 cm deep and 1 meter wide, the removable trunk cover is 56 cm high. There are now 200 liters of storage space underneath.

A hill start aid, electrically folding exterior mirrors and automatic light control are available to support the driver, parking sensors are not yet mentioned in the German equipment, but are available in other countries. Control elements for the radio and a Bluetooth hands-free system for accepting and rejecting calls are integrated into the steering wheel for an additional charge. Voice control is not included.

A SmartKey opens the doors for an extra charge when approaching the vehicle, which is started with this equipment using a start button.

Inside, in addition to optional seat and steering wheel heating, there is an equipment-dependent number of shelves and a standard make-up mirror, which is flanked on both sides by LEDs that come on one after the other in the style of an airport taxiway.

In the European basic equipment, the interior is only cooled with outside air; above this, an air conditioning system can either be ordered as standard (e.g. in Austria) or with an additional package for the medium equipment (e.g. Germany). Automatic air conditioning is only possible in the top equipment, and in some cases there is also an additional package (Germany).

In addition to a black and black-dark-gray interior, there is also a light-gray interior, the seats of which can optionally be equipped with red, light-gray or black synthetic leather, which surrounds the same fabric on the backrest and seat - with the two latter colors with a contrasting stripe in between.
