The Sportage has the same chassis as the South Korean military jeep, which was briefly available as a civilian version in Germany under the name Retona .

From autumn 1998 the Sportage was produced again in South Korea, in 1999 the body shape was revised. The first Kia Sportage was only available with selectable all-wheel drive and an off-road reduction.

In Pakistan, the model was assembled by Dewan Farooque Motors between 2000 and 2004 (or later) .

After the name was not used for two years, Kia presented the second generation of the Kia Sportage at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris in September 2004 . This shares its platform and various technical components and engines with the Hyundai Tucson .

technology

The Sportage has a self-supporting body with independent suspension and, depending on the model, front or all-wheel drive . In contrast to the first generation, the last one is permanently available, with a multi- disc clutch electronically distributing the power between the front and rear axles.

Rear view

Two petrol engines were offered for the market launch in early 2005: on the one hand a 2.0-l four-cylinder with 104 kW (141 hp), five-speed manual transmission and optional front or all-wheel drive and on the other hand a 2.7-l V6 with 129 kW (175 PS), four-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive.

In addition, a 2.0 l common rail diesel engine with 83 kW (113 hp) without a particulate filter, as in the Kia Carens, was used until autumn 2005 . This was offered in conjunction with a five-speed gearshift or with a four-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. After a revision, the diesel had an output of 103 kW (140 PS) up to the 2009 model year. In addition, the maximum torque increased to 305 Nm, a diesel particulate filter was part of the standard equipment and the basic version was equipped with front-wheel drive and a new six-speed manual transmission. The optional automatic was only offered for the front-wheel drive version. Even with a further increase in output to 110 kW (150 PS) in the 2009 model year, the consumption of 7.0–8.0 liters per 100 km is maintained. The automatic is still only available for the 2WD model.

Facelift

In addition to the two revisions in 2007 and 2008, a modification was made at the end of 2006 / beginning of 2007. The trim above the license plate was widened and supplemented by a chrome application.

2007

From June 2007 the Kia Sportage for Europe was manufactured by Kia Motors Slovakia in Žilina , Slovakia . In addition, the model was now also covered by a seven-year guarantee, which was first introduced for the Kia cee'd . It covers seven years up to 150,000 km, since 2010 now for the entire vehicle (previously five years for the entire vehicle and five years for the drive train).

The exterior innovations included dark headlight surrounds, a revised radiator grille, bumpers painted in body color and new light alloy wheels. Ten colors are now available for the exterior paintwork. At the rear, the trunk lock on the trim above the license plate was omitted. In the interior, the seats have been enlarged and their lateral support has been optimized, and the rear bench seat has been lowered by five millimeters to improve headroom.

The technical improvements included a more direct power steering, a stiffer chassis with standard 16-inch alloy wheels for less body roll and larger brake discs at the front for improved deceleration. The wind noise has also been reduced by enlarged exterior mirrors and optimized seals on the sliding glass roof. Compared to the model manufactured up to then, the trailer load increased by 12.5% to 1,800 kg. The previous engine variants remained unchanged, the equipment lines were given new names: the LX version was now called Cup and the EX version was called Champ .

2008

For the 2009 model year, the Sportage underwent a more extensive model upgrade and went on sale in September 2008.

The changes to the exterior included new headlights on the front end, a modified radiator grille, now round fog lights and a revised bumper with indicated underride protection. At the rear, the lighting graphics have been redesigned and the bumper modified, and the lower part of the body is covered with black plastic. A double tailpipe was also part of the standard equipment, the light alloy wheels were modified again.

The biggest change in the engine variant concerned the diesel, whose output was increased by 10 to 150 hp. A thicker steering wheel rim, a new audio system with radio, CD player and USB / AUX connection as well as a passenger airbag that can be switched off are used in the interior.

This is technically identical to the Hyundai ix35 , which is why the Sportage's engines are sometimes used. It is a 120 kW (163 hp) gasoline engine and a 2.0-liter common rail - diesel engine with 100 kW (136 hp). The diesel version has also been available with 135 kW (184 hp) since model year 2011.

Rear view

Production began in June 2010 at the Kia plant in Žilina , Slovakia , and the market launch took place in early August 2010.

The new model is longer, wider and flatter than its predecessor, and the wheelbase has also been lengthened. The design is based on the brand's new style with a large, trapezoidal grille, almond-shaped headlights and a more prominent brand logo.

The light edge in the lower door area and an inwardly curved surface above the rear license plate are also typical of the design. Further characteristics are the exhibited fenders, large fog lights, a wide C-pillar as well as an all-round plastic cladding on the lower edge of the body. The contours of the bonnet are particularly emphasized and the horizontally arranged rear lights extend into the trunk lid.

In 2011 the Sportage as well as the Kia Optima and the Peugeot 508 I received the red dot design award .

In spring 2014, the Sportage received a facelift . There were changes to the front design, rear lights with LED technology, changes in the interior and on the chassis.

safety

In the Euro NCAP crash test in November 2010, the Kia Sportage received 33 points for occupant protection, 42 points for child protection and 18 points for pedestrian protection. According to the institute, this makes it the safest car in its class.
