The Kia Motors Slovakia, sro is a car manufacturer and engine manufacturer with headquarters in Slovakia Teplička nad Váhom . The company was founded on February 13, 2004 and entered in the commercial register of the city of Žilina (German Sillein ) on February 26 under the file number 15074 / L. Around 3900 employees are currently employed here, spread over three shifts.

Factory management

The permission to build the plant was given on March 18, 2004 during a ceremony in Bratislava by Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda to the CEO of the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group , Chung Mong-koo . The plant is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kia Motors Corporation . In-Kyu Bae has been appointed President and CEO of Kia Motors Slovakia . Chang Kyun Han got the post of executive director. In 2010 the posts were reassigned. So had Myung-Chul Chung held the position as President and CEO. In-Kyu Bae fell to the lesser position of one of two directors, where he ousted the predecessor Chang Kyun Han. Last but not least, Eek-Hee Lee took over as President and CEO in January 2012 after Myung-Chul Chung announced his intention to return to South Korea.

Factory data

The company's premises cover a total of 166 hectares, 56.8 hectares of which are built on. The foundation stone was laid in April 2004, although construction work only started in October 2004 and was finally completed in December 2005. Kia had estimated an investment of 1 billion euros for the construction . Around 300,000 vehicles can be assembled here every year. From 2010 to 2011 there was a plant expansion of the engine department in order to increase the capacity due to the ever increasing demand. The construction of the new building had cost around 100 million euros. 44 hectares are now part of the built-up area. The annual engine production capacity was increased to 450,000 units. The factory premises also extend over the localities of Nededza , Mojš and Gbeľany and can be found along road No. 583 .

Kia Motors Slovakia currently exports to 44 countries. About 2 percent of the vehicles produced in Slovakia remain in their own country.

Company history

After the construction work was completed, the assembly and manufacturing facilities began. The assembly line was set up first so that the assembly of CKD kits for the Kia Sorento could begin immediately. The order for this was placed by the parent company, as the number of orders exhausted the capacities of the Busan plant. A large part of the components had already been stored in a South Korean interim storage facility a few months earlier, which is why older month information can be read from the vehicle identification number for some vehicles in the early assembly time. A short time later, the company started its own production of diesel and gasoline engines . Since then, the company has been the only automobile manufacturer in Slovakia that also manufactures its own engines.

The pre-production of Project ED began on June 9th, 2006. It was supposed to be the first European car model of the South Korean brand Kia. Up to series production , which began on December 6, several different design studies have been presented. The model name posed a challenge in terms of its task of being the entry-level model for the European market. First, a derivation and merging of the terms Seed and European Deisgn (European design) should be found. But no meaningful names could be found. So in the next step you came to a simpler consensus and chose for the English see it (see it / see), which you converted into an unusual dialect expression, namely into the current cee'd . This simplification ultimately resulted in the term Creation of European Engineering Design , which although not in line with the hoped-for merger, was ultimately retained as the final term at Kia. This is how the name Kia cee'd was found. In addition, further names and short forms were introduced for the other model variants. The station wagon known as Sporty Wagon is called Kia cee'd sw for short . The coupe is called Sporty Proletariat , but is better known in its short form Kia pro cee'd . The exhibition presented the convertible, but ultimately remained, as the name suggests, a concept study. In short, this was called Kia excee'd .

The Kia Sportage , the next product from the Slovak Kia plant, followed in June 2007. It is particularly noticeable because of the darker headlights. Not even a year later it was given a facelift . Meanwhile, a revision of the cee'd model series was discussed, which was then implemented in July for the five-door models. Then the assembly line was converted for the Hyundai ix35 . Production of the new sport utility vehicle began in September. However, full production could only start in January, as the Sorento kits in stock had only been used up in December. Then the focus was on expanding the engine plant and the upcoming market launch of the new generation of the Kia Sportage . It was not until spring 2011 that the pro_cee'd finally received the new design, which its relatives had already implemented two years earlier. Among other things, the plant took over the production of the Kia Venga .

The second generation of cee'd was launched in spring 2012, and the current generation of the KIA Sportage in 2015.
