Chung Mong-koo (born March 19, 1938 in Seoul ) is the CEO of the South Korean Hyundai Kia Automotive Group .
Life
Chung Mong-koo was born to Chung Ju-yung , the founder of the Hyundai Motor Company . He graduated from Hanyang University in 1967 and soon after went to Hyundai.
In 1974 he became head of Hyundai Motor Service and in 1980 of Hyundai Precision & Industry . This company was later rebuilt and produced vehicles. In 1981 he became CEO of Hyundai Pipe and in 1986 of Inchon Iron & Steel . In 1996 he became Chairman of the Hyundai Group after his uncle Se-yung was fired from that position. However, his father still had de facto control over the company. In 1998 he became CEO of Hyundai Motor.
His brother Mong-hun committed suicide in 2003, which paved the way for Chung Mong-koo to become the top of the Hyundai group.
He was arrested in April 2006 but released on bail in late June 2006. On February 5, 2007, the Seoul District Court found him guilty of infidelity and breach of trust. He embezzled around 50 to 82 million euros, used it privately and stored it in black money accounts. With this money he also bribed numerous officials and politicians. The sentence was three years in prison, but was initially not carried out. In September 2007, the sentence was suspended and Chung Mong-koo was obliged to donate US $ 895 million and give lectures on transparent management.
