Chung Ju-yung (born November 25, 1915 in Tongchon -gun, Kangwŏn-do , Chōsen ; † March 21, 2001 in Seoul , South Korea ) was the founder of the Hyundai Group, once South Korea's largest multinational conglomerate ( Jaebeol ).
Life
Chung was born in Kangwŏn-do Province in what is now North Korea and worked to improve the relationship between North and South Korea until his death in order to achieve Korean reunification .
He founded Hyundai and brought modern shipbuilding to South Korea. First, he convinced Greek ship owners to commission new ships from him. With these orders, he convinced London bankers to give him capital for the construction of shipyards . Today Hyundai is the largest shipbuilder in the world.
His younger brother, Chung In-yeong , was also an entrepreneur and founder of the Halla Group .
After his death, a number of parts of the Hyundai Group were split into independent companies, including the Hyundai Motor Group , Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Engineering and Construction.
