The first generation of the Sorento was presented in spring 2002. In August 2002 it was also introduced on the German market.
The design was created by Byung-Jun Min for the European taste and established in March 2000. The subsequent development cost 260 million euros.
In 2004 the vehicle achieved a market share of four percent in Germany, followed by the Porsche Cayenne and the Volvo XC 90 . This placed it eighth out of 44 SUV models on the German market, which resulted in a delivery time of up to twelve months, which was previously unusual for this manufacturer.
The best-selling engine of the Sorento was the common rail turbodiesel 2.5 CRDi with 103 kW / 140 PS. The two-tone paintwork was included in the upscale EX equipment, while single-color models were only available with the LX basic equipment. This changed with the revision in autumn 2006. The leather interior was previously only available in gray in Germany.
Terrain skills
The Kia Sorento, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) that looks classic from the outside, is built on a ladder frame with a screwed-on body with a rigid rear axle and its construction is more like an off-road vehicle . The front axle has an independent wheel suspension with triangular wishbones . With a torque of 340 Nm for the diesel engine, a trailer load of up to 2.8 t total weight can be pulled, and since the facelift even up to 3.5 t.
In the LX version, the Sorento has switchable all-wheel drive with terrain reduction as standard . The EX has permanent all-wheel drive, electronically controlled (0: 100 to 50:50) with variable torque distribution front / rear and terrain reduction. This means that the front-wheel drive is only activated when required via a multi-plate clutch on the rear axle. An ESP was not available before the facelift, but the vehicle passed the elk test flawlessly. The chassis was fine-tuned together with Porsche, the steering is described as direct.

Technical specifications
The Sorento was available in German-speaking countries with the following engines: with gasoline engines as 2.4 16V (102 kW / 139 PS and 192 Nm torque), as 3.5 V6 (143 kW / 194 PS and 294 Nm) - replaced by a 3 from the end of 2006 3-liter V6 petrol engine (177 kW / 242 PS and 304 Nm torque) - or as a diesel with a displacement of 2.5 liters and common rail injection (140 or 170 PS and 314–343 or 392 Nm torque) . The diesel engine with 103 kW (140 PS) meets the Euro 3 emissions standard , but is assigned to Group III because of the permissible vehicle weight. This means that the taxes are the same as those for a Euro 2 vehicle. The same applies to the 170 hp diesel engine built from September 2006, just one step further: The engine complies with Euro 4 even without the now optional, open particle filter, but is assigned again to Group III due to its weight, which means that taxes are at Euro 3 level .
A five-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment on all four-cylinder engines. The 3.5 V6, on the other hand, was always connected to a 4-stage automatic converter; this was optionally available for the 140 hp diesel engine until 2004. In 2004 this transmission was replaced by a new five-speed automatic converter. The diesel gearbox was also smoother in the lower gears and the torque of the diesel was increased from 313 to 343 Nm. In autumn 2006 the V6 engines also received a five-speed automatic; a manual transmission was still not available for this.

Crash tests
The Sorento received four out of five possible stars in the US NCAP crash test in a head-on collision. The Sorento received five stars in a side crash.
In the 2003 Euro NCAP crash test , the Sorento received four out of five stars. Deformations in the footwell, hard impact zones in the knee area and an increased risk of head injury from the airbag were criticized. In the side impact, however, he received full points. The loads on all side parts of the body were low. The Sorento received one of four possible stars for pedestrian protection.
Facelift
In September 2006, the Sorento received a revised appearance through a facelift , which was combined with an increase in the performance of the petrol and diesel engines. In Germany, a new 3.3-liter V6 petrol engine with 182 kW (248 hp) was introduced, in addition to the diesel engine with 125 kW (170 hp) increased by 21%, replacing the previous V6.
An ESP was now available as standard. The permissible trailer load has been increased from 2.8 to 3.5 tons.
The chassis, which in the original version had been tuned together with Porsche, was retuned and described by testers as being significantly more comfortable. The originally very tight set-up was intended to reduce the inclination of the bend as well as the twisting in the terrain. But it was retrofitted by many owners with a lift.
A single-color paint job was now also available in the upscale EX equipment, as long as the buyer opted for silver or black. LX equipment was still monochrome. The leather interior in the interior was now available in black as well as gray.

The second generation of the Sorento was presented at the Seoul Motor Show in April 2009; it was launched in South Korea in the same month. From January 29, 2010, the new model was also offered in Germany.
The design of the Sorento is characterized by rounded edges and curved lines. The interior is designed as a five or, for the first time, seven-seater. In Germany, the interior is standard in black, optionally in leather (including instrument cover). In Austria and Switzerland, the seats are optionally available in beige leather or in shades of brown (oak look on the panels, brown leather seats) or in black and white leather. A panoramic glass roof is also optional in all three countries.
Terrain skills
The body of the new Sorento is 10 cm longer. It is no longer based on a ladder frame , but is self-supporting. This measure and savings in all-wheel drive reduced the curb weight of the vehicle by an average of 150 kg. Due to this fundamental modification of the chassis architecture and thus its off-road capabilities, the manufacturer thought about renaming the vehicle. The successor as an off-road vehicle was taken by the Kia Borrego . The Sorento now has the same platform as the Hyundai Santa Fe . A hill descent aid is standard, a reversing camera is optional. A reduction gear is no longer available, however, and the trailer load dropped from 3.5 to 2.5 t.

Facelift
In October 2012 the Sorento received a facelift. External features of this revision are the changed aprons and modified rear lights.
Changes have also been made to the engines. The 2.4-liter gasoline engine now delivers 141 kW (192 hp) instead of 128 kW (174 hp). The V6 petrol engine, which is only available in the USA, now has slightly less displacement (3.3 instead of 3.5 l) and more power than before (290 instead of 277 hp).
Production of the second Sorento ended in September 2014.
Technical specifications
There were modernized engines for the Sorento. It is also optionally available with front-wheel drive instead of four-wheel drive in some countries . A particulate filter is standard for the diesel.

Crash tests
The Sorento passed the US NCAP crash test in 2011, two years after its appearance, and thus already after the modernized test procedure. The American traffic safety authority is now measuring more points on the dummy and has added a post test, similar to that of the Euro NCAP, in which the vehicle is pushed sideways against a tree-like post. The Sorento achieved four stars in all three tests.
The Sorento achieved five stars in the EU NCAP crash test. In the frontal test, the driver had slightly increased loads on the chest and legs, with the knees being kept away from the steering column area. In the side test, only the chest is exposed to slightly increased loads, in the stake test then medium. In the rear impact test, the active head restraints on both sides provide effective protection. Pedestrians are exposed to heavy loads on the hips and increased loads on their legs (16 out of 36 points).

Kia Motors showed the new Sorento in South Korea on August 28, 2014, while it made its European debut at the 2014 Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris.
The Sorento shares its platform with the Kia Carnival. The car increases in length by almost ten centimeters to 4.78 m, while the width remains almost the same (1.89 m). There is also an increase in the wheelbase, it now measures 2.78 m. This change gives more legroom in the interior and the trunk is larger. As before, the Sorento is available as a five- or seven-seater. With the third row folded down, the seven-seater now fits 605 l in the trunk, previously it was 515 l load volume.
In terms of engines, only a 2.2-liter turbodiesel was offered in Germany at the market launch. This has 147 kW (200 PS) and a torque of 441 Newton meters. Since the revision at the end of 2017, a 2.4-liter gasoline engine with 138 kW (188 hp) has also been available in Germany. Additional engines are offered for other markets. On the drive side, there is a choice between pure front-wheel drive or front-wheel drive with automatically switchable all-wheel drive.
