The Kia Retona is an off-road vehicle from the Korean manufacturer Kia Motors . It is the civil version of the Korean military jeep, which is based on the same chassis as the Kia Sportage . The name Retona stands for Return to Nature . The main competitors of the Kia Retona were the Suzuki Jimny and the Lada Niva .
Model history and construction
Kia introduced the Retona, first presented in 1997 as the successor to the Asia Rocsta , in Germany in 1999, initially exclusively in the version with four-cylinder turbo diesel and five-speed manual transmission. In mid-2000 a gasoline engine with the same displacement was added, and in early 2001 the model was discontinued without a direct successor.
all wheel drive
In normal road operation (two-wheel drive) the front wheels are separated from the drive train. This avoids unwanted wear on the front drive train and increased fuel consumption. The separation is done by freewheel hubs . The freewheel hubs are locked either automatically or manually.
The automatic freewheel hubs work either with negative pressure or mechanically. With automatic freewheel hubs, after switching off the all-wheel drive, you have to drive backwards a little to reactivate freewheel. This does not apply to the pneumatic freewheeling hubs controlled by negative pressure.
With manual freewheel hubs, the freewheel must be locked or unlocked directly on the wheel hub before switching on and after switching off the all-wheel drive.
