The first generation of the Kia cee'd marked with the abbreviation ED was presented on September 28, 2006 at the Mondial de l'Automobile de Paris . The vehicle came onto the German market on January 20, 2007 as a five-door model with five possible engines and four equipment variants. In the summer of 2007 the station wagon called “cee'd_sw” followed, and at the beginning of 2008 the three-door “pro_cee'd”.

The Kia cee'd (ED) was produced in series from December 2006 to March 2013, the second generation of the cee'd was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2012 and received the "JD" key.

Since its appearance, the first generation of the Kia cee'd has received ten different national awards as “Car of the Year” from various European specialist publications and has become Kia's greatest success on the European market to date.

technology

The Kia cee'd shares a completely newly developed floor pan and the technical base with the Hyundai i30, which appeared in July 2007 . This is why the three gasoline and three diesel engines with manual or automatic transmissions are also used in the Hyundai i30.

Engines and gears

All six transversely installed front motors drive the front wheels and have a traction control system that is supposed to prevent the drive wheels from spinning. The four-cylinder engines have 16 valves and engine blocks made of aluminum or gray cast iron. The engine temperature is kept constant via a closed liquid cooling system . The manufacturer assumes that across Europe 48 percent will opt for a diesel engine and around 95 percent will choose a manual transmission.

Technical improvements made it possible to reduce the average consumption and pollutant emissions for the facelift model by five percent. With the help of the new start-stop system , the lowest CO 2 emissions are now 117 g / km. Furthermore, the 1.6-liter diesels received a new six-speed manual transmission.

Petrol engines

2.0-liter CVVT engine in the Kia pro_cee'd

The spark-ignition engines were used for the cee'd -Modellreihe developed and have engine blocks made of aluminum (except 2.0 L) and two overhead, via the timing chain (1.4 l, 1.6 l) or toothed belt (2.0 L) driven Camshafts . The additional designation CVVT stands for continuous variable valve timing , i.e. valves with variable control. The CVVT engines are also equipped with multi-point injection and a contactless ignition system. The exhaust gases would be cleaned with a regulated three-way catalytic converter .

Diesel engines

Kia Motors refers to its common rail diesel engines as CRDi engines. In the cee'd, these have a turbocharger with adjustable guide vanes (VTG), Bosch common rail injection and engine blocks made of gray cast iron. The two 1.6 l CRDI diesel engines are new developments and are produced in Žilina. They have two overhead camshafts that are driven by a timing chain and an intercooler . The largest diesel, which is already used in the Kia Carens , was added to the engine range in July 2007. It has an overhead camshaft with a toothed belt drive. The diesel exhaust gases are cleaned by a diesel particulate filter with an open system, and a closed system followed in May 2007 for the 115 hp diesel. The engines meet the Euro 4 emissions standard and, since mid-2010, Euro 5, which became mandatory on January 1, 2011. Since the 2.0-l engine could not meet this standard, it was replaced in the course of 2010 by the 1.6-l diesel with 94 kW (128 hp).

LPG engines

The three petrol engines can be converted to LPG operation since April 2007 . The so-called LPG models ( Liquefied Petroleum Gas ) will receive the following changes as part of a conversion: An additional steel tank is installed in the spare wheel well with a pressure relief valve, fuse and 80% stop (tank is only 80% full). For operation with liquid gas, gas injection nozzles, a pressure regulator with evaporator, an LPG control unit and a switchover device are also required. The LPG control unit uses the data from the engine control unit to calculate the injection quantities. The engine control unit continues to monitor the combustion. The system pressure in the gas tank is between six and twelve bar, the injection pressure is two bar.

While the performance of the engines and the trunk are fully retained (a tire repair kit replaces the spare wheel that is otherwise available), exhaust emissions, especially those of CO 2 and soot particles , are reduced by a total of up to 80 percent. Further advantages are a lower noise level, longer range due to more tank volume and lower fuel costs. Kia Motors gives a three-year guarantee on all conversion parts, installation and any consequential damage on LPG vehicles. The regular guarantee remains unaffected by this regulation.

When driving, you can choose between gas or petrol at the push of a button in the cockpit, with gas operation increasing consumption of 10 to 15 percent because the gas has a lower energy content. According to Kia, the additional cost of 2699 to 2899 euros with the cee'd amortizes after a mileage of around 68,000 kilometers.

transmission

The manual transmissions, both the five-speed and the six-speed version, contain various innovations. For example, cone synchronizers (for first and second gear) should enable faster and more precise gear changes. To prevent accidentally engaging reverse gear, the driver must pull up a safety ring on the gearshift lever when engaging this gear in order to release the shift gate.

The four-stage automatic has an electronic control unit that monitors parameters such as acceleration, deceleration, engine speed and speed, among other things. It came as no surprise to various trade journalists that Kia Motors is assuming only a small percentage of interested parties for the automatic variant. The star commented, for example, "the somewhat antiquated automatic transmissions [sic!] From Kia take getting used to - to put it mildly".

Steering, chassis and brakes

A speed-dependent, electro-hydraulic rack-and-pinion power steering is installed in all versions . At 2.69 to 2.86 turns of the steering wheel, depending on the tire size used, the car has a turning circle of 10.3 to 10.8 meters.

When chassis front one is independent suspension with wishbones, MacPherson struts with gas pressure shock absorbers and stabilizers are used. A multi-link rear axle should ensure appropriate comfort and good driving characteristics; see also Miscellaneous (Frankfurter Rundschau) .

The five-door model has a ground clearance of 150 millimeters.

The hydraulic dual-circuit brake system works with ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 280 mm at the front and 262 mm brake discs at the rear. The braking system includes ABS , EBD , BAS and a brake booster as standard . From 100 km / h to a standstill, the car needs between 38.7 and 39.7 m.

Since the market launch, the Kia has been available as a five-door. Instead of a notchback like its predecessor, the Kia Cerato , Kia has been adding the cee'd_sw station wagon to its model range since August 2007 . In December 2007, the sportier three-door pro_cee'd came onto the market. All bodies are built as five-seater. The versions differ in various details regarding the design; so the pro_cee'd only has the bonnet and the front fenders in common with the cee'd . The interior, on the other hand, is the same in all versions except for the door panels.

Dimensions

With external dimensions of 4.24 to 4.49 meters, the Kia cee'd lies between the competitors VW Golf VI and Ford Focus . The estate version is based on models such as the VW Golf Variant or the Mazda3 Sport . Compared to its predecessor Cerato, the five-door is around ten centimeters shorter and the station wagon is roughly the length of the former notchback model.

Furnishing

A total of four different basic equipment schemes were available for the cee'd from the start of sales. The LX Basis version, which is only available for the five-door model with the smallest gasoline engine, served as the basis . This was followed by the more comfortable version LX and the even higher quality EX equipment. The top model TX was only delivered with 2.0 liter engines.

In the course of the model update in autumn 2009, the features of the individual models were slightly revised. In addition, there is now an optional two-zone automatic air conditioning, various new audio systems and a different navigation system. The ESP is also supplemented by a hill start function. The basic version intended exclusively for the five-door model is now called the Attract . This is followed by the Vision equipment, the even more extensive Spirit version and the new top model Mind .

Standard equipment

The cee'd offers six airbags , ABS , ESP (exception: Attract ), TCS , an on-board computer , electric front windows and central locking as standard in all equipment . With higher equipment variants, there are additional comfort and safety extras such as automatic air conditioning , fog lights , alarm system, cruise control, rain / light sensor, active headrests at the front, partial leather seats with heated seats or parking sensors. A special feature in the C-segment are the water-repellent side windows available from the EX version and the chip-controlled windscreen wipers. The Kombi Sporty Wagon is also equipped as standard with a roof rail, a luggage compartment partition net and a 55 liter compartment under the luggage compartment floor.

The audio system, which is standard in all equipment, was specially adapted to the vehicle for the first time in a Kia model. It contains an RDS radio with CD and MP3 player, four (from LX version six) loudspeakers and a steering wheel with integrated controls. From EX there are USB 2.0 and AUX inputs and an iPod control in the center console .

Special equipment

The special equipment includes metallic paintwork, leather seats (up to 09/2009 for TX), an electric sliding / tilting glass roof (from EX / Spirit) and the 4-speed automatic transmission for the 1.6 CVVT, 1.6 CRDi 115 and 2, 0 CVVT (from EX / Spirit). All other optional extras are combined in different packages depending on the standard scope of the selected equipment. From July 2007 to 2009, the navigation system with arrow display, otherwise only available in packages, could also be ordered separately. It was eventually replaced by a new multimedia DVD navigation system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth hands-free system and direct iPod connection.

Sports package

A sports package is available in Germany for all three body styles. This consists of dark-edged headlights, a radiator grille with four chrome struts similar to that of the cee'd concept vehicle and 5-spoke aluminum wheels with 225/45 R17 Michelin tires. Models with sports package have black interior trim, stainless steel door sills, aluminum sports pedals and light gray contrasting stitching on the seats, steering wheel and leather center armrest in the interior, some of which is equipped with leather and fabric. The five-door versions also have heated seats at the front and, since August 2008, a tire pressure monitoring system and a height-adjustable passenger seat.

In addition to the above-mentioned additions, the sports package of the facelifted cee'd has various add-on parts with a piano lacquer look: a sports radiator grille, the frame for the headlights and decorative strips.

Special models

As part of the sponsorship of the European Football Championship in 2008 , the five-door cee'd was available as a Top Star special model with a mobile navigation system and a price advantage of 1430 euros.

From June to the end of September 2008, Kia took over the fuel costs for the five-door models for up to a year as part of a special campaign. The campaign was limited by specified conditions such as 12,000 kilometers annual mileage, the average consumption of all engines (6.14 or 6.27 l / 100 km for the cee'd_sw ) or the average fuel price in June of 1.55 euros per liter. The assumption of costs was linked to a Shell credit card.

As part of the environmental bonus , the five-door equipment variants were supplemented by the Attract in March 2009 . This version, reduced in size compared to the previous entry-level model LX Basis (without ESP , no radio remote control for the central locking ), was advertised with an entry-level price of just under 10,000 euros.

The two special models Vision and Spirit for five-, three-door and station wagons were also available from March 2009 . While Vision was based on the LX models and was supplemented by air conditioning, fog lights, heated seats in the front and a storage compartment in the trunk floor, Spirit built on the higher-quality EX equipment and was equipped with automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, and fabric seat covers. Leather combination with heated seats at the front and darkened rear windows expanded. Both had a start-stop system on request .

Since Kia has offered a seven-year guarantee on all models since January 1, 2010, the Seven Stars special models were launched. In these, the underlying equipment, Vision, has been expanded to include air conditioning, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights and leather controls. The Seven Stars models were available in combination with the 1.4-liter petrol engine and offered a price advantage of 1795 euros.

In 2011 the Sun Edition of the cee'd was presented, which was based on the Vision model with a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and was available from EUR 12,990.

From October 2011 there was a special model called Edition 7 for all three body variants . This was based on the Vision equipment and was available with both gasoline engines and the 115 hp diesel. A special feature was that the 90 hp petrol engine was now also available in the pro_cee'd . The special models also have air conditioning, a map navigation system, a rear parking aid including a reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated seats and front center armrests as well as leather controls. The vehicles were also given a metallic paintwork in black, gray or one of two shades of silver (the pro_cee'd was also available in plain white). According to the manufacturer, the price advantage was 4,360 euros. In 2012, the equipment structure of the Edition 7 models was changed. An automatic climate control, cruise control, a storage compartment in the luggage compartment floor and the black radiator grille from the sports package were now also included. The latter was previously only included in pro_cee'd . In addition, the five-door and station wagon were now also available in the white plain paint.

On the occasion of the European Football Championship 2012 , which was supported by Kia, there were the special models Dream Team for 2012 . These are characterized by 17-inch alloy wheels, 6.5-inch map navigation including a reversing camera, LED daytime running lights and a cruise control system. The pro_cee'd with the 90 hp petrol engine could also be ordered for this special model . The prices started at 15,750 euros for the pro_cee'd and were thus up to 5000 euros below a similarly equipped Vision series model.

The special model Kia cee'd_sw 1.6 CRDi 90 Business Line was also introduced in January 2012 , which is also based on the Vision equipment line and also contained a navigation system with reversing camera, air conditioning, center armrest and heated seats in the front, as well as the start-stop system. The price advantage was 2,635 euros.

Price development

At the start of sales, the prices for the cee'd (including 19% VAT ) started at 14,300 euros (1.4 CVVT LX basis) and ended for the 2.0 CVVT TX for 21,425 euros as a five-door model. Since July 2007, the 2.0 CRDi TX combined version has marked the upper end of the price range at 24,905 euros. In December 2007 the base price of the five-door was increased by 130 euros to 14,430 euros; the other prices remained unchanged. In the 2009 model year, a new basic model called Attract was also available for the five-door model for 13,690 euros. The environmental bonus of 2500 euros paid until the end of 2009 was supported by Kia with its own 1200 euros "environmental bonus", which means that the Kia cee'd was available from 9990 euros.

The revised models continued to be sold from 14,430 euros, but offered better standard equipment. The most expensive model remained the cee'd_sw with a 2.0 CRDi engine in Mind equipment for 25,655 euros. With the 2.0-liter engines discontinued, the most expensive configuration was a cee'd_sw Mind 1.6 CRDi 128 with automatic transmission for 27,125 euros.

The door panels in the interior are made of jute-like kenaf fibers that are recyclable .

The interior was slightly redesigned for the facelift in autumn 2009. Higher-quality materials, new seat covers and inlays as well as modified instruments are among the detailed improvements. The new steering wheel with thinner spokes, the changed gear lever and the modified center console, which housed the new audio systems and a higher-positioned information display, were more striking.

Concept vehicles and production models

Concept models

The basis for the final design of the different body shapes were the three studies Kia cee'd , Kia cee'd_sw and Kia pro_cee'd designed by Gregory Guillaume, many of which were adopted for the series versions. At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Kia also presented a convertible version of the cee'd . It goes by the name of excee'd cabrio concept , but comes from the leadership of Peter Schreyer, Head of Design , who joined Kia in 2007 and previously worked for VW and Audi .

“Our brief was to create a teaser for the new Kia model, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006,” said Gregory Guillaume, chief designer of Kia Europe. Guillaume was one of ten participating designers from EU countries.

Different light edges and folds, right up to the indentation in the lower part of the passenger compartment doors, are defining the style of the study. The model presented in Geneva in spring 2006 has a tin-colored exterior paintwork and red-painted brake calipers. The widely exposed wheel arches, which contain 19-inch wheels made of polished aluminum with 265/30-R19 low -profile tires, are striking . The style-defining feature of this study is a light edge that runs from the front, over the A-pillars and the roof to the area of the rear end.

The Hatchback - Coupe gave a sportier feel than the five-door and saw mostly of its own. The roof of the four-seater study is 25 millimeters lower than that of the five-door and in the color of cashew .

Further features are the two-tone, five-twin-spoke 19-inch wheels with low-profile tires of size 265/30 R19, the glossy or matt black vehicle elements or the two glass roof stripes.

The interior features black and “pilot brown” leather, three metal-framed round instruments, a short leather gear knob surrounded by a metal frame and four shell-shaped backrests with aluminum headrest holders. The vehicle floor is covered with carbon leather and yellowish contrasting stitching runs through the interior. The near-series model of the three-door model is 4291 mm long, 1800 mm wide and 1433 mm high.

cee'd_sw

While the concepts of the five- and three-door models looked futuristic, the station wagon is based directly on the production model. It takes up its front section and should optically match the sedan . The 4.47 m long and 1.49 m high car has the same wheelbase of 2.65 m as the hatchback and a tailgate in the style of the Chrysler 300C Touring as well as front headlights with black background. The flap attached higher up in the roof thus provides a larger opening and is intended to make loading bulky goods easier. There is also another storage compartment in the luggage compartment floor.

Convertible study excee'd at the 2008 British International Motor Show in London

The convertible study painted in meringue white was the first vehicle designed by the new Kia head of design, Peter Schreyer . Schreyer, who was also responsible for the design of the Audi TT and the VW New Beetle , said: “I am sure that the soft top will experience a renaissance. We've been living with the romantic idea of open-air driving for a long time, and for me the fabric roof is the key to a truly fulfilling convertible experience. ” That's why the 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 105 kW (143 hp ) powered study of a soft top in the dark chocolate color . The convertible is based on the coupé study pro_cee'd and shares a floor pan and technical components with the same wheelbase. The exterior with a convex chrome strip in the door sills and the electric convertible top, however, are new. Further characteristics are the 19-inch chrome-look alloy wheels, the wedge-shaped side view and a leather interior that, like the body, is white and brown.

eco_cee'd

This concept vehicle based on the pro_cee'd was presented at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt and the five-door version followed at the Geneva Motor Show 2008 . Through various aerodynamic modifications, the 1.6-liter diesel with 115 hp that is used should achieve a consumption of 3.9 liters per 100 kilometers. The engine meets the Euro 5 emissions standard and should emit 104 grams of CO 2 per 100 kilometers (five-door 106 grams of CO 2 ). With the help of computer-aided analyzes and tests in the wind tunnel and a new, more closed radiator grille, the drag coefficient was reduced to 0.29. The 15 millimeter lower body and the air baffles installed under the vehicle are designed to improve airflow. The wheel arches are also equipped with spoiler lips and "Michelin Energy" tires in size 205/50 R17 are fitted for reduced rolling resistance.

In order to reduce emissions and save fuel, the injection system and turbocharger have been modified. As a result of this and by reducing internal engine friction, fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were ultimately reduced by a total of 17 percent.

The start-stop system Idle Stop & Go , which has been available to end customers on request for certain cee'd models since March 2009 , was presented for the first time at eco_cee'd . In the study, it is coupled with the battery management system developed jointly with Bosch , charges it when braking and switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a standstill. When the clutch is depressed, the engine starts automatically, provided that the starter has recognized that it is appropriate and the battery is sufficiently charged.

A new six-speed transmission with long gears four to six reduces the engine speed and reduces vibrations and noise. Similar to the BMW EfficientDynamics energy saving package, there is a gear change indicator in the cockpit of the eco_cee'd . In order to save the weight of the spare wheel, a tire repair kit is used in this car.

Externally, the study stands out due to the white paintwork, a different radiator grille and the black-colored front lights. The wheels of the environmentally friendly vehicle also have a chrome look.

Kia cee'd Hybrid at the IAA 2009

At the Paris Motor Show 2008 , a prototype of the cee'd with a parallel mild hybrid engine in conjunction with a CVT transmission was presented. This was developed on the basis of the previous Kia Rio Hybrid and is used as a test fleet comprising nine prototypes in Europe and America. The hybrid drive system of the model consists of a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor of 15 kW (20 hp) and 105 Nm of torque at 1500 min -1 . A total of 103 kW (140 PS) and a torque of 227 Nm are available. Both engines mainly work together when there is a high demand for performance, e.g. when accelerating to overtake. Purely electric driving is not possible. The top speed of the cee'd Hybrid is 185 km / h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 11.8 seconds. A lithium-polymer battery pack (180 volts; 5.3 Ah) behind the rear seats serves to store energy , reducing the volume of the trunk. The Euro 5 emissions standard is achieved through the use of the ISG start-stop system and a recuperation brake . In addition, these measures to reduce fuel consumption lead to an average consumption of 4.8 liters per 100 kilometers and CO 2 emissions of 114 grams per kilometer. In the revised hybrid model presented at the IAA 2009, CO 2 emissions were reduced to 96 grams per kilometer.

Kia cee'd EcoDynamics at AMI 2010

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010, Kia presented the cee'd EcoDynamics . This is another fuel-saving version with five doors and a hatchback, which is powered by the 1.6-liter diesel engine with 66 kW (90 hp). The maximum torque of 235 Nm is from 1900 to 2750 min -1 are available. Compared to the series model with this diesel engine, the engine control has been optimized and the injection system has been given new software. In addition, an energy-saving water pump with variable delivery rate, an alternator with energy-saving management and low-friction oils for the engine and transmission are used. The sixth gear of the manual transmission was also translated twelve percent longer . As with the eco_cee'd models, the aerodynamics have been improved through various measures. These include a body lowered by 15 millimeters, 16-inch light-alloy wheels with low-friction tires of size 205/55 R 16, smooth underbody paneling and air deflectors on the wheel arches. The ISG start-stop system with improved system control and a switching point display are also used. Overall, CO 2 emissions could be reduced to 98 grams per kilometer. A version reduced in CO 2 emissions to 94 g / km was presented in October 2010 at the Mondial de l'Automobile . This model also has the fuel-saving measures of the existing vehicle, and a 90-horsepower diesel engine with a torque of 240 Nm at 1900 min -1 .

Series models

The concept studies were intended to provide an outlook on the final design of the production vehicles, which was therefore only changed in detail. The unusual names of the studies and the characteristic design feature in the form of an indentation above the door sill have also been retained.

cee'd

The Kia cee'd adopts the basic shape of the study and many elements such as the almond-shaped headlights, flared wheel arches and the shape of the rear lights in series production. On the other hand, the large wheels and the chrome-framed double exhaust were dispensed with. The rear fog lights and reflectors are now located at this point. The window line also rises more abruptly to the rear, so that the D-pillar is a bit narrower.

Furthermore, the exterior mirrors and the rear window have been enlarged and the interior has been redesigned. The shoulder line, like the sill bead, is less pronounced. The hatchback has a drag coefficient of 0.33.

cee'd_sw

Compared to the very near-series concept vehicle of the Sporty Wagon station wagon, only marginal changes were made to the series model. The front section resembles the sedan up to the A-pillar and a roof rail reinforces the roof silhouette, which slopes slightly towards the rear. The vertical tail lights, the tailgate reaching into the roof and the triangular windows in the rear end in the style of the Peugeot 407 SW are retained . The rear overhang, which has been lengthened by 23.5 cm, and the roof, which has been increased to 1525 millimeters, results in a 196 liter larger luggage compartment.

pro_cee'd

Kia pro cee'd 2.0 TX Granada Yellow Rear.JPG

Kia pro_cee'd (2008-2011)

The front view of the three-door model differs from the other models in terms of the narrower radiator grille and the sportier front apron with round fog lights. Compared to the sedan, the pro_cee'd is a little longer, with the roofline being lower. In addition, the opener for the trunk lid, the number plate holder integrated in the bumper and the visible single tailpipe on the right-hand side are noticeable at the rear. The side view is characterized by an indentation that extends further into the doors, a strongly developed light edge and a narrower ribbon of windows.

Compared to the study, the production model dispenses with the chrome details, the glass roof and the orange-rimmed tires. Conventional B-pillars, exterior mirrors and headlights were also used. The tail lights, the rear roof spoiler, the narrow rear window and the concave sheet metal fold above the rear bumper have been almost taken over.

eco_cee'd

Instead of an environmentally friendly overall vehicle like the VW Golf BlueMotion , various fuel-saving technologies have been introduced for all body and engine variants since March 2009. It started with the ISG start-stop system for the two smaller gasoline engines presented in the study . With the help of the system, fuel consumption and pollutant emissions in city traffic are to be reduced by up to 15 percent and in the combined consumption cycle by up to six percent. In April 2009, Kia finally began marketing the fuel- saving label EcoDynamics , in which all elements for increasing efficiency are combined. This includes the aforementioned ISG system, a switching point display and smooth-running tires on 15 and 16-inch wheels. Since the facelift in 2009, these consumption-reducing measures have also been available for the 1.6-l diesel engine and since 2010 have also been available for other models.

Facelift

Kia cee'd (2009-2012)

In autumn 2009 the cee'd received a facelift. The changes to the exterior initially only affected the five-door models. The facelift for the pro_cee'd followed in March 2011.

A wider, chrome-framed radiator grille in the characteristic Kia design, modified headlights with projection technology and a newly contoured bonnet characterize the front of the revised model. In addition, the front bumper was modified and now contained a larger, trapezoidal air inlet. The five-door vehicles also received angular fog lights and the three-door round ones. There were also new light alloy wheels, different paint colors and exterior mirrors with integrated indicators (from Vision ).

While the cee'd got a discreetly modified rear section with taillights in LED optics, the Sporty Wagon only received a modified taillight graphic.

Competitive products and awards

In Germany, the Kia cee'd mainly competes with the VW Golf V / VI , the Opel Astra H / J and the Ford Focus II . In Europe, vehicles such as the Fiat Bravo , the Seat Leon and the Alfa Romeo 147 are added. Competitors from Asia are the Honda Civic , the Nissan Tiida and the Toyota Auris .

In comparison tests, the cee'd usually performed well. For example, in a Autobild test with nine compact five-door cars, it came third, behind the Golf and Auris, but ahead of Astra, Focus, Civic, Bravo, Citroën C4 and Renault Mégane . In addition, the cee'd in the test table drawn up by Autobild for all compact cars with three or five doors tested from 2005 to 2007 was in the upper field. Of 55 vehicles, the 1.4-l engine with LX basic equipment was in 14th place and the 1.6-l in 15th place. Above were vehicles such as the Golf, the Astra, the Auris and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class . The cee'd was able to prevail in tests against the partially identical Hyundai i30 .

After 100,000 kilometers, the Kia cee'd with the 115 hp diesel engine passed Auto Bild's long-term test without any particular defects. The chassis, the quality of workmanship in the interior and the space were positive. The poor all-round visibility, an unevenly applied cavity preservation and slight rust in the area of the rear door rebates and window frames were criticized. Overall, the cee'd received the grade 1 and reached fifth place of all vehicles tested. It did just as well as the BMW 320i Touring .

In addition to more than 30 victories in comparative tests in the trade press, the car won various international prizes. This makes the Kia cee'd the manufacturer's most successful vehicle to date.

  • The British magazine Autocar recognized the seven-year guarantee as Idea of the Year with the Autocar Award 2007 .
  • The Auto Express New Car Honor 2007 was also dedicated to the guarantee as a special innovation.
  • The What Diesel Car? -Magazin awarded the title Best Hatchback 2007 (English "best hatchback ") because the cee'd had beaten the Golf, Focus, Mégane and Astra in a comparison test.
  • The Towcar Awards 2007 - Green Award received the cee'd 1.6 CRDi as the most environmentally friendly of 50 vehicles tested.
  • The best value for money was confirmed to the cee'd with the Auto 2007 Innovation Award from the Dutch Autobild subsidiary Autoweek .

The car also received the following awards in 2007:

  • Family Car of the Year in Sweden
  • Car of the Year in Greece, Romania, the Canary Islands and Lithuania.
  • Fleet Car of the Year in Poland
  • ING Business Class, Lease Car of the Year in Belgium
  • Best Wagon Crown for the cee'd_sw and Best Hatchback for the cee'd in Denmark

In 2008, the cee'd was the first vehicle from a Korean manufacturer to receive certificates from TÜV Nord for a good ecological balance ( ISO standard 14040 ) and environmentally friendly product design ( ISO standard 14062 ). The design, production and development processes in the Žilina automobile plant were examined with regard to the inclusion of environmental aspects, the degree of recyclability and the environmental impact over the entire life cycle. In addition, the measures to save fuel and the type of materials used on the vehicle were included in the evaluation.

Crash test

The cee'd is the first Kia vehicle to achieve the highest rating of five stars in the “ Euro NCAP ” crash test for occupant protection. The test vehicle was a five-door model with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine from 2007. With 34 points, the cee'd did better than the BMW 1 Series , but it was worse than the best in the compact class with 37 points , the Nissan Qashqai . The cee'd scored 37 points in child protection and is therefore on par with the Golf, but less good than the Citroën C4 , which with 42 points is best in its class. In terms of pedestrian protection, the cee'd achieved an average value of 11 points. He achieved a total of 82 points, which represent an improvement over the manufacturer's last compact model; The Kia Cerato achieved a total of 62 points and three stars in 2006.

In the frontal impact, it was criticized that parts of the dashboard could endanger the knees and thighs of those sitting in front and that the clutch pedal was pressed ten centimeters into the interior. Meanwhile, the highest scores were achieved in the pole and side impacts. In terms of child safety, it was criticized that the warnings for the correct use of the child seats and the Isofix anchors were not always and optimally visible. The bumper can be dangerous for adult pedestrians and the head is also poorly protected in a collision.

Motorsport use

At the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in 2008, a standard pro_cee'd with a 2.0 CRDi engine started for the first time . The registered and insured racing car, which was provided with a license plate in accordance with the regulations, was driven by the Italian driver team of the tire manufacturer Continental over the almost 2900 kilometers . In addition to Continental, Kia Motors Italia and Castrol also sponsored the BD Racing team .

The 1280 kg launch vehicle is a pre-series version of the Sport GT with 125 kW (170 PS) originally planned for autumn 2008 . In the race, the four-cylinder common-rail diesel made 123.3 kW (167.6 hp) at 3670 min -1 , reaching a maximum torque of 399 Nm at 2500 min -1 . Compared to the production model, the mechanics and electronics were sealed in around 20 places so that the original parts could be retained. The safety equipment was also adapted to the rules of the race. The tires and wheels (ContiSportContact 3 in size 225/35 R18 W on 18-inch AEZ light alloy wheels) and the lubricants from sponsor Castrol were not special racing versions. This was to test how far the original parts, the road tires, the mechanics and the lubricants can survive racing.

The pro_cee'd started the race on position 213 in the starting field of 230 vehicles and finished 104th after 111 laps and 2,886 kilometers. At 14.1 l / 100 km, the pro_cee'd was the vehicle with the lowest average fuel consumption in the race.

For the 2008 season, the Kia cee'd Lotos Cup was started, a racing series that took place on race tracks in Poland, the Czech Republic ( Automotodrom Brno ), Hungary ( Hungaroring ), Slovakia ( Slovakiaring ) and Germany ( Motorsport Arena Oschersleben ) until 2010. For this purpose, 25 Kia pro_cee'd with 2.0-liter petrol engines were specially equipped. This includes a roll cage, racing seats with 6-point belts, Momo sports steering, chassis from Bilstein and H&R and Alcar-Dotz-Daytona wheels with Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires.

Jaroslav Baránek took first place in a cee'd at the 2008 Slovak Championship in the Diesel Uphill race . He won six out of thirteen races that took place in Dobšiná and Zvolen , among others . The racing car was built in Slovakia in less than twelve months and some details were changed compared to the production model. A roll cage and a fire extinguishing system were installed in the interior and the 2.0 CRDi diesel engine increased to 147 kW (200 hp) with a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Furthermore, modifications were made to the suspension, air filter and brake system to withstand the increased demands in the races.

In September 2008, the British racing team Chad Racing signed a contract with Kia Motors Belgium, according to which the team could participate in the Belgian Touring Car Series in the S1 class from the 2009 season . The cars are two Kia pro_cee'd Silhouettes , whose development began when the contract was signed. Except for the external appearance, these models have nothing in common with the production vehicles. The chassis, the approximately 324 kW (440 hp) racing engine, the chassis and many other components were designed by various manufacturers who specialize in racing vehicles. The two driver teams initially consisted of Ian Dockerill and Philippe Steveny as well as Raf Vanthoor and Koen Wauters . In 2010, three vehicles were used with changing drivers and driver teams - including Didier de Radiguès , for example - in the 2011 season now four . In all seasons, the teams were able to win or collect points in various races such as in Spa-Francorchamps .

Tuning and accessory programs

pro_cee'd with attachments from ATH Hinsberger (2008–2009)

There are numerous tuning and accessory programs for the cee'd that are not available ex works, such as the one from Giacuzzo. The five-door model, which was then converted, stands out with its new front spoiler lip and a sporty rear apron, as well as a rear roof spoiler and two trapezoidal tailpipes. The 19-inch light alloy wheels of the Reflexx line, which are in premium silver , are covered with " Pirelli P-Zero Nero" tires in size 225/35 R19 and the vehicle is lowered by 35 millimeters. The output of the 1.6-liter diesel engine was increased from 85 kW (115 PS) to 100 kW (136 PS) and the torque increased from 255 to 290 Nm. Various body modifications and add-on parts such as wing doors are also available for the pro_cee'd and cee'd_sw .

Attachments from Incus on the cee'd xR

Special features of the accessories from ATH Hinsberger are, for example, daytime running lights, side protection strips and stainless steel entry strips with cee'd lettering. A modified radiator grille, side skirts, various roof, front and rear spoilers and a four-flow exhaust pipe system are also available.

At the AutoRAI vehicle fair in Amsterdam in March 2007, a package of sporty add-on parts for the cee'd was presented. This was designed by the vehicle tuner INCUS (Innovative Customization System) and contains a matt black framed mesh radiator grille with xR emblem and red and silver-colored trim. The new front apron with a larger air inlet and black-framed fog lights is also matt black and in the body color. The side skirts, the rear roof spoiler and the rear apron with an indicated diffuser and black reflectors are also striking. Speculations about supercharged engines with 200 hp and more as well as their own sporty xR equipment version for several Kia series similar to the OPC models from Opel or the RS vehicles from Renault, however, never came true.
