The Kia Pregio was a pickup truck that the South Korean auto company Kia Motors first launched on its home market in 1996. The model replaced the Kia Besta , which was still based on the Mazda Bongo III. Kia worked with Mazda until the mid-1990s, so many earlier Kia models were based on Mazda vehicles. In the home market, the main competitor of the Pregio was the Hyundai H-1 .

The Pregio came on the market as a three- or six-seater panel van . There was also a minibus version with nine or twelve seats. From 1999 a minibus version with 15 seats was also available. The 12- and 15-seat versions had a longer wheelbase than the remaining versions. The drive was the Kia J2 2.7 liter diesel engine with 83 hp, which transferred its power to the rear axle via a 5-speed manual gearbox . The curb weight is given as 1820 kg. In the smallest body version, a top speed of 145 km / h was achieved.

Facelift 2003

Facelift model

In 2003 the Pregio appeared on the market revised. In addition to a new front with a larger front bumper in order to meet the Euro NCAP safety standards, it now also had new engines depending on the market. The safety equipment now also included airbags in addition to the anti-lock braking system that was already available . In addition to automatic air conditioning , seat heating was now also available. The 2.7 l diesel engine now offered 59 kW / 80 PS at 4000 rpm and max. 304 Nm torque at 2400 / min, as well as 59 kW / 80 PS at 4000 / min and max. 227 Nm torque at 2400 rpm with a now available 4- speed automatic transmission .

In addition, there was now a 2.5 l diesel engine with common rail injection that developed 69 kW / 94 hp. There was also a 3.0 l variant of this JT engine with 85 hp at 4000 rpm and max. Torque 250 Nm at 2200 rpm. Both engines were offered with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 3.0 l optionally with a 4-speed automatic gearbox of the 2.7 l engine. The 3.0 l engine was primarily intended for the 12 and 15-seater minibus versions.

Kia Pregio 1998-2005 in Europe

Policy

From 1998 to 2005 the Pregio was also offered in Europe. In the markets with right-hand traffic, however, there was only the panel van version. After the revision in 2003, the Pregio in Europe had the 2.5 l diesel engine with 69 kW / 94 PS and a five-speed manual transmission. The cheapest version of the box van cost 16,746 euros in 2003. In 2005 the import ended when the model was phased out. Since Kia was now part of the Hyundai Motor Company , the Hyundai H-1 should not have any additional competition with the successor model.
