The Kia Optima (until 2011 in Europe Kia Magentis , in China and South Korea Lotze ( Hangul : 기아 로체) or from the third generation K5 ) is one notchback - Limousine of South Korean automobile manufacturer Kia , which in the middle class is located.

The Optima is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Sonata and is the successor to the Kia Clarus .

In autumn 2000, the Magentis started as the successor to the Clarus . It was mechanically identical to its sister model, the Hyundai Sonata . Both had differences in design only in the front and rear areas, side lines and interior were largely identical.

In autumn 2003 the model received the internal abbreviation GD II as part of an optical facelift, externally recognizable by the double headlights characteristic of the Kia models at the time (see Kia Shuma ), which emphasized a similarity to Mercedes-Benz models. The interior received a new center console, which was vertically surrounded by a decorative frame made of now darker burl wood. Previously, this had been used over a large area and without a frame. In some European markets, the steering wheel, unchanged in leather, also received inserts made of dark wooden decorative film. In 2004, the vertical "waterfall grill" was replaced by more subtle, horizontal chrome strips, in 2005 the orange turn signal inserts were removed , as in the Kia Rio , and the lamps themselves were colored orange.

The four- and six-cylinder engines both weigh almost the same, since the block of the larger one is made of aluminum and that of the four-cylinder is made of cast iron, so the differences in weight are purely due to the equipment.

The independent suspension is designed with two wishbones on both sides at the front and an anti-roll bar and multi-link rear axle as well as Sachs gas pressure shock absorbers all around. The rear axle also has a dynamic toe-in control for better cornering stability mentioned in the brochure of the facelift model. The active safety includes an electronic brake force distribution as part of the 4-channel ABS and traction control (not the latter in the basic LX). An ESP was missing. For passive safety, two front and two side airbags are included in all versions. On the comfort side, special features are the "solar glazing" with UV and infrared insulating effect, as well as the AQS automatic air circulation system ("Air Quality System", not in the basic version LX) for switching to indoor air when the exhaust gas density in the intake air is too high . The driver's seat was also raised for the facelift.

The new generation of the Magentis started on November 10, 2005, and outwardly differed greatly from the previous model generation. The differences to the parallel model Hyundai Sonata are also more obvious and are underlined by a separate platform. This has a longer wheelbase and a MacPherson at the front instead of the Sonata's double wishbone suspension .

The Magentis was equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 106 kW (144 hp), a 2.4 l with 118 kW (160 hp, not in Europe) and a 2.7 l V6 with 138 kW (188 PS, only with automatic transmission) and for the first time also available with a 2.0 l common rail diesel engine with 103 kW (140 PS). The safety equipment has also been improved so that the Magentis now has six airbags, ABS and ESP as standard. In the EuroNCAP crash test, it received four out of five possible stars.

Facelift

The model presented in Korea in June 2008 and also available in Germany from January 2009 gained 8 cm in external length as part of a revision and received a redesigned front and rear section as well as the brand-typical “Tiger Nose” radiator grille designed by Peter Schreyer . In terms of equipment, LED taillights, steering wheel shift paddles and, in the respective top equipment, a smart key for keyless entry into the vehicle are now available in some markets .

The revised model was first shown at the New York International Auto Show in March 2008 and has new options such as: B. a start button. The output of the 2.4-liter four-cylinder has been increased from 120 kW to 129 kW with lower consumption at the same time. The V6 engine was also slightly revised and its output increased to 142 kW. With the exception of the smart key and rocker switches, the innovations were introduced in the Korean market in 2007 for the old exterior design.

In the summer of 2010, the production of the second generation Magentis was stopped.

The new generation was presented at the New York Auto Show in April 2010. Like the previous generations in North America, this is now also called Kia Optima in Germany .

The premiere planned for summer 2011 was postponed due to delivery bottlenecks in the existing model range and was therefore only launched on March 3, 2012.

Its design, which clearly stands out from its predecessor with more striking lines, was created by Peter Schreyer . In 2011 it was awarded the “ red dot ” and the “ iF product design award ”. It was compiled in Frankfurt (Main) and Irvine (California). Technically, the Optima is based on the new generation of the Hyundai Sonata . Its predecessor was based on the "MG" platform (its name has nothing to do with the MG car brand ), which is only used for Kia , on which the Kia Carens III is also based. By dispensing with V6 engines, the front subframe could be simplified so that the vehicle weighs significantly less overall than its predecessor thanks to weight savings.

Rear view

Like the Sonata, the vehicle will be available in various markets with gasoline engines with 2.0 (164 hp) and 2.4 liter displacement (175 hp) , a direct injection version of the 2.4 l engine ( 201 hp ) or a turbo direct injection engine. Variant of the 2.0-liter engine ( 278 hp ) offered. All of these engines come from the same series. From 2011 a full hybrid version of the Optima with 209 hp will also be available in the USA and Canada .

In Europe, the Optima is offered with a newly developed 2.0-l petrol engine with 165 hp , a 1.7-l diesel engine with 136 hp , both combined with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions, and in a full hybrid version. In contrast to the US version, the displacement in the hybrid version has been reduced from 2.4 l to 2.0 l.

In addition to the LED daytime running lights available for the first time for the Optima, LED lighting is again available as an option for the taillights. This was only available in South Korea for the previous model. In addition to this, there are options such as Bluetooth hands-free system, hill start assist, tire pressure monitoring system, air-conditioned front and heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic roof. The last three equipment details mentioned are not available for the Sonata.

For the 2014 model year, the Optima received a slight facelift .

The fourth generation of the Optima came on the market at the end of 2015. At the beginning it is available with two engines, a gasoline and a diesel engine.

A station wagon version - the Optima Sportswagon - was presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2016 . The length and width are taken from the sedan, and the height is increased by five millimeters. Since September 24, 2016, it has been available from dealers in Germany at prices starting at € 25,990.

In March 2018, Kia presented a revised version of the Optima at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It has been on sale since August 2018. In Germany, the sedan has only been available for the plug-in hybrid since then. All engines are still available for the station wagon. In Switzerland the Optima is only available as a combi hybrid, in Austria, however, all versions are available for both the sedan and the wagon.

Plug-in hybrid versions

The Optima sedan has been available as a plug-in hybrid since September 2016 . The lithium polymer battery has a capacity of 9.8 kWh and enables purely electric driving of up to 54 km (NEDC). The trunk volume is reduced from 510 to 307 liters thanks to the battery. There is also no possibility of pulling a trailer.

The Sportswagon of the Optima has also been available as a hybrid since July 2017. Compared to the sedan, the battery capacity has been increased to 11.3 kWh. This results in a longer electric range of 62 km (NEDC). The trunk volume of the Sportswagon is reduced to a lesser extent from 552 to 1,686 liters to 440 to 1,574 liters. At the same time, the battery in the Sportswagon is no heavier despite the higher capacity. Kia specifies the weight of the batteries as 130.7 kg (sedan) and 130.5 kg (Sportswagon). In addition, the Sportswagon can still be used as a trailer.

The hybrid vehicles are charged as standard via Schuko or via an optional type 2 charging cable. The charging time from 0 to 100% at a type 2 charging station is given as 165 minutes (limousine) and 190 minutes (Sportswagon).

In autumn 2019 it became public that the Optima in Europe is expiring. This confirmed rumors that had been around since the summer. The fifth generation of the Optima will only be offered by Kia at home, in China and North America.
