The model is placed between the Kia Soul and the Kia Sportage . The stainless steel is produced in Hwaseong in South Korea. The plug-in hybrid with the same technology as the Hyundai Ioniq has also been on the market since August 2017 . The Kia Niro plug-in hybrid has an electric range of 58 kilometers. Since summer 2018 there has been a purely electric vehicle in South Korea with a range of up to 450 kilometers. The e-Niro has also been available in Europe since December 2018.

At the International Motor Show in September 2013 in Frankfurt am Main , Kia showed the Niro Concept, a preview of a compact crossover model. The Niro Concept was designed by Peter Schreyer and has two scissor doors . The concept vehicle is powered by a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 118 kW (160 PS) on the front axle and a 33 kW (45 PS) electric motor on the rear axle. When the Niro Concept was presented, it was not yet decided whether there would be a production vehicle .
The world premiere of the production model took place in February 2016 at the Chicago Auto Show . In South Korea, 2,440 units were already sold within two weeks (April 18-29, 2016). That is a sales record for a car in the green segment in South Korea. Of the hybrid model Hyundai Ioniq , which uses the same drive technology, only 755 units were sold in the same period. Sales started in France and the Netherlands in July 2016. In Germany, the car has been available since September 2016.
The Niro was presented as a plug-in hybrid at the 87th Geneva Motor Show in March 2017. Here, too, the drive from the Hyundai Ioniq is used, the manufacturer specifies the electric range as 58 kilometers. It has been on sale since August 2017 at prices starting at 32,350 euros.
As part of the CES in Las Vegas in January 2018 , Kia showed an electrically powered Niro concept vehicle. The series version Niro EV , which came on the market at the end of 2018, shares the technology with the electric version of the Hyundai Kona, also introduced in 2018, and the Kia e-Soul, which was introduced in spring 2019 .
safety
In 2016, the Kia Niro was tested for vehicle safety by Euro NCAP . In the basic version, the Niro received four out of five possible stars. However, since a safety package is optionally available for the model, the Niro was also tested with the safety package. In this test, it received five stars out of five.
Technical specifications
The vehicle is driven by the front wheels; an all-wheel drive variant is not provided. As with the Ioniq, special attention was paid to economical consumption behavior in the development phase. A large part of the body was made of light, but still stiffer special steel, the trunk lid and the bonnet of aluminum. Despite the design, the car has a drag coefficient of 0.29. The internal combustion engine works like in the Toyota Prius in the Atkinson cycle . The behavior criticized by some drivers when accelerating Toyota hybrid models with IVT transmission , which is expressed by briefly louder high engine speeds, does not apply to the Niro. It uses a dual clutch transmission so that gear changes are smoother and faster.
e-stainless steel
A battery-powered version has been offered under the name e-Niro since 2019 . In February 2019 it was announced that delivery times of one year must be expected for new orders. The model has a battery capacity of 39.2 kWh or 64 kWh and a WLTP range of 289 km or 455 km.
