The Kia Cerato (internal abbreviation LD ) is a car model from the South Korean manufacturer Kia Motors that is part of the compact class. In Germany, the Ceed is currently available instead of the Cerato , while it is being replaced by the Cerato in other markets.

The Cerato was produced as a steep and notchback from November 2003. In America (as Spectra) and Europe it was sold from April and May 2004.

The Cerato ranked between the small Rio and the medium-sized sedan Magentis and was offered in two body and two trim levels .

Just three years after the start of production, it was replaced by the cee'd in Europe . In some European countries (such as Sweden and the Netherlands) it was offered for another year after a facelift, in some regions until 2009 and in China even longer (according to a source at least until 2016). There he received small innovations such as indicators in the side mirrors and other taillights.

The name Cerato is borrowed from Bach flower therapy , in which the Ceratostigma willmottianum is intended to strengthen judgment and self-confidence. In its botanical homeland, Tibet , the plant is a symbol of wisdom.

The Cerato was produced in Hwaseong ( South Korea ). Starting in 2005, the Chinese market was supplied by the Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motors joint venture in Yangcheng .

It was developed on the platform of the Hyundai Elantra XD2 at the later production site in Hwaseong. The Cerato also forms the basis for the electrically operated Horki 300E, which will be available from 2017 or 2018 .

Body versions

The Cerato was available in two body styles: five-door hatchback and four-door notchback. The first form was new for Kia in the compact segment, which it previously served with hatchback models.

For the first time, Kia also accentuated the sideline, here with a continuous curve below the window line. Both versions can transport five people and are the same up to the B-pillar. Exceptions are the shape of the fog lights and the darkening of the headlights and radiator grille on the hatchback. Furthermore, the notchback does not have a rear window wiper, but is closed off by a chrome strip on the license plate. Since the end of Cerato sales, the Magentis has been the manufacturer's only notchback sedan in Europe.

Furnishing

The entry-level version was the LX , while the EX version promised a high level of comfort . Both items of equipment could be combined with all engines in the hatchback, whereas the EX version of the notchback was only available with 2.0-liter units.

Standard equipment: As standard, all models have six airbags , ABS , power steering , a center armrest at the front, central locking , electric windows all around and a manual, CFC- free air conditioning system, as well as a radio preparation with four loudspeakers and a roof or automatic antenna (depending on the bodywork) before the first facelift. , which supplied a standard CD / MP3 radio from the facelift.

The higher-quality EX variant also offers automatic air conditioning with a pollen filter and automatic air circulation for odorous or exhaust-gas-intensive air, an alarm system, 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, an electrochromatic interior mirror, stepless instrument dimming, light sensor, leather controls, center armrests front and rear, on-board computer (with remaining range, average speed, daily kilometers and since model year 2006 also fuel consumption) and central locking with remote control, which contains a button for the trunk. The vehicle locks again after 30 seconds if no door is opened. In this way, accidental opening when the key is removed has no consequences. Acoustically, two tweeters complement the four full-range speakers, while the aluminum look of the center console visually replaces the black of the basic equipment. The 2.0-l CVVT also has a cruise control system as an EX . The driver's seat can be adjusted in angle and height. Kia foamed the material "Fullmaflex" into the front backrests in order to achieve a similar adjustment in the lumbar area instead of a lumbar support . The seats are described as comfortable, their lateral support as poor.

Special equipment: The following were available for an additional charge:

  • Metallic paint
  • Diesel particle filter (from model year 2006 )
  • Becker DTM navigation system
  • 4-stage automatic for gasoline engines, not for LX notchback
  • Electric sliding or tilting glass roof, only for 2.0 liter machines in the EX hatchback
  • Electric sliding and tilting glass roof and partial leather seats with heated seats in front, only for EX notchback
  • Seat covers in partial leather, with heated seats at the front, only 2.0-liter engines of the EX five-door.

The accessories catalog also contained extras such as rims, protective strips, transport solutions (e.g. trailer hitches or luggage racks)

Facelift

Security-relevant changes can be found in the security area .

  • 2005

The first facelift took place in September 2005, with it began the 2006 model year . Recognizable by the new radiator grille, it comprised an improved automatic and a second, newer diesel engine. Both now also have an open filter for a surcharge. The on-board computer provided information on consumption for the first time, and a CD / MP3 radio became standard (see equipment and engines ).

  • 2006

In June 2006, a second, comprehensive model upgrade followed in South Korea. In late summer, they began to be exported as model year 2007. You can recognize them on the outside by the radiator grille in Magentis look and the new notchback, while the inside of the speedometer and center console have been given a slight change in shape, but their arrangement has remained the same. In the higher equipment, the contrasts were set new: the speedometer was framed by a chrome ring, the gear lever, window regulator area and door handles were given an aluminum look, while those of the center console were reduced to vertical, framing stripes. The door panel in perforated leather gave way to a fabric panel (except in the USA).

Technically, the entry-level engines of the cee'd were anticipated. The 1.6-l petrol engine was replaced by its extensively revised successor, which, like the 1.6-l diesel, also made its debut here. The latter was a drilled out and quieter version of the previous 1.5-liter engine (→ engines ).

safety

Front, side and continuous curtain airbags are used for vehicle safety. Belt force limiters and tensioners are only included for the front seats. The headrests of all five seats are height-adjustable, from late summer 2006 they were optionally of an active design. The rear seats contain three-point Isofix brackets for child seats throughout Europe . The electric window lifters do not contain anti-trap protection, but, unlike manual ones, can be deactivated by the driver.

An anti-lock braking system was standard, with the exception of the cheapest model with a gasoline engine, as well as traction control . An ESP, however, was not available. The ADAC rates the cornering behavior as sovereign, as long as the car is not fully loaded or has to make quick evasive maneuvers on slippery surfaces. The steering is easy and direct, the braking distance is satisfactory - on average 41 to 42 meters with 10 full brakes from 100 km / h. The directional stability even at high speeds, the consistent braking performance during prolonged use and the brake assistant , which corrects too hesitant braking in emergency situations, are praised. In the event of an accident, very high forces can be applied to the ironing door handles.

The Cerato passed numerous crash tests, some of which resulted in production changes. Only the pile and roll-over test are missing. The latter was only developed in the USA in 2005, with the former being due to the fact that the manufacturer did not use this Euro NCAP test, which was optional until 2009 and had to be paid for by the manufacturer. With its head airbags, the Cerato fulfills the requirements for this.

Frontal tests

  • US-NCAP 2004–2006 driver's side: passenger's side:
  • US-NCAP 2007-2009 driver's side: passenger's side:

The US NCAP tests driving at 46 km / h against a concrete wall. The American traffic safety authority does not measure the lower body. The four-star result (until 2007) was already achieved by the Cerato predecessors Shuma and Sephia .

  • EU-NCAP 2006-2009 adults:
Principle of Euro NCAP and IIHS: an offset barrier on the driver's side

The test was carried out in March 2006 and the result applies from VIN KNEFE243265225853. The model upgrade from summer 2006 was not tested, it passed the other tests the same (IIHS) or better (US NCAP). Two cars of 55 km / h, equally heavy and colliding on the driver's side, were simulated. This resulted in moderate loads on the driver's legs as the pedals moved into the interior. The passenger's seat belt put a similar strain on the passenger's chest area, despite being equipped with a pre-tensioner and force limiter. The vehicle received a precautionary devaluation for structures on the steering column, center console and glove compartment that could be problematic for both sides in other accidents. The top rating was given to the head area and the body rigidity. The overall result is below the competition at the time.

  • IIHS 11 / 2003–01 / 2005 bad

As with Euro NCAP, the collision is simulated with an offset vehicle of the same weight but with a higher differential speed (128 instead of 110 km / h). However, only the driver's side on which the obstacle is located is checked here. As in the Euro NCAP, the body strength received the top rating. There were also no badly completed measurement points. The result is the result of a devaluation. The IIHS decided to do this because, in addition to marginal head and footwell ratings (poor airbag upholstery and pedal shifts on the right) , the vehicle also only showed acceptable upper body protection.

  • IIHS 02/2005 - 01/2009 acceptable

After the first test in 2004, Kia made the air holes in the driver's airbag smaller to stabilize the air buffer. Before that, the head penetrated the airbag up to the steering wheel. The change took place in February 2005 and reduced the head load by one level to acceptable . Furthermore, the marginal footwell rating changed from the right to the left leg. This also shows the variance of crash tests, since apart from the modified airbag, both vehicles were identical. The better rating of the header area was now also the overall rating, as the reason for the devaluation was eliminated. Nevertheless, the result was just under the lowest in the segment. That this applies to an acceptable rating illustrates the effect of crash tests on the manufacturer's efforts - especially in comparison to the side and rear tests of the IIHS, which were only added in 2003.

Side tests

  • US-NCAP 2004–2006 driver's side: passenger's side:
  • US-NCAP 2007-2009 driver's side: passenger's side:

A deformable barrier, which is modeled on a limousine, is brought up to the side at 63 km / h. Only the chest area is measured. The result is a slight improvement on the Cerato predecessor .

  • EU-NCAP 2006-2009 adults:
Principle of Euro NCAP and IIHS: A 50 km / h fast barrier is approached.

Here, too, a limousine-like barrier is brought up to the side. It is slower at 50 km / h, but measurements are more extensive, from the waist up. The abdominal area was exposed to high loads, which "migrated upwards in an unrealistic way" over the spine and relieved the chest area with measurements. These incorrect values led to the devaluation of the chest area. The other measuring ranges received the top rating. Structural changes were made in August 2007 and there was no follow-up test. The result applies to all Cerato from VIN KNEFE243265225853.

  • IIHS 11 / 2003-08 / 2007: poor

The American IIHS performs the most extensive side test. It checks the entire body plus a rear passenger and uses an SUV- like barrier. It is driven to the vehicle at 50 km / h and caused high stresses on the driver's upper body, which were declared as part of the overall ranking. His lower body and the upper body of the rear passenger also experienced moderate stress. The head area received the top rating. This shows that the high center of gravity of the approaching vehicle is transferred to the passengers. There is little derivation into other areas. The IIHS therefore certifies that the body has marginal side protection. Saturn Astra and VW New Beetle showed similar results , slightly better Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla , only good Prius and Subaru Impreza . Other models were not tested at that time, or only without side airbags.

  • IIHS 09/2007 - 01/2009: marginal

Structural and airbag modifications improved the rating for the rear passenger to a good overall result and reduced the stress on the driver down the hip. But they did not change the high loads on his upper body. In recognition of the improvements, the overall rating rose one notch.

child protection

  • EU-NCAP 2006-2009:

Backward-facing child seats should not be used on the front passenger seat as the front airbag cannot be deactivated. This is indicated by a sticker in the front passenger sun visor. This location resulted in a deduction of points. According to the advice, the tests were carried out in the rear, for the 18-month test dummy also using the Isofix brackets. Apart from the satisfactory result in the chest area, low loads with good protection were measured throughout.

Rear impact

  • IIHS 2005–2009: acceptable

A vehicle of the same weight drives the test vehicle at 32 km / h. The result was acceptable with and without active headrests . This exceeded the usual segment and was unique for the version with passive headrests. The active head restraints became available with the 2006 facelift , as standard from summer 2008.

pedestrian

  • EU-NCAP 2006-2009:

Except for the middle area of the bonnet, the body does not offer any pedestrian protection.

Bumper test

  • IIHS 2006–2009: poor

The damage pattern with parking bumps is very inexpensive, as with all compact cars tested at the time. A total of four tests were run: at 8 km / h at the front and rear, and at 5 km / h at a front and rear corner.

technology

landing gear

The Cerato completed test drives in Europe for coordination.
  • front: MacPherson struts with gas pressure shock absorbers, wishbones and stabilizer, front-wheel drive
  • rear: spring struts with gas pressure dampers, longitudinal and wishbones, stabilizer
  • 2-circuit brake system, servo-assisted with 4-channel ABS , internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and disc brakes at the rear
  • EBD electronic brake force distribution with detection of traction
  • BAS brake assist
  • All models, with the exception of those with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and the LX models with 2.0 l displacement and notchback, are equipped with electronic traction control (TCS).

In summary, the result is the image of a vehicle optimized for city and country road traffic. Despite the elaborate chassis and the speed-dependent power steering, a less relaxed driving experience is conveyed at motorway speeds. Test reports from the ADAC and the Autobild praise the “responsive and precise steering”. They describe the chassis as sovereign and rumble-free, only the body wobbles noticeably. The "moose test" carried out in each case was inconspicuous. Cross struts in front of and behind the passenger compartment and under the dashboard contribute to this. They keep the shock absorber mount at a constant distance in curves and thus support its stabilization (see torsional stiffness ). The braking behavior describes the area of safety .

The turning circle diameter of 11 meters is normal for its class.

body

A continuous side profile surrounds the doors and reduces gaps.

Before the export to Canada started at the same time as the European one, the Canadian Kia board member Bill Porter sent an engineer hired from Toyota to Hwaseong to reduce the manufacturing tolerances. In later test reports, the gap dimensions actually received laudatory mention that they were comparable to those of Acura and Audi . However, no changes made by the engineer contribute significantly to this, but rather the basic construction of the side profiles. These were defined earlier and range from the A-pillar to the rear lights. Fewer individual parts reduce the possibility of inaccuracies of fit.

The body has a C w value of 0.32 for the notchback and 0.33 for the hatchback.

Trunk dimensions
Cerato hatchback Golf V
Width: 96 cm 106 cm
Depth: 74 cm 73 cm
- with the rear seat folded down: 140 cm 153 cm

The permissible roof load is 75 kg, the trunk is determined by the body. In the hatchback it holds 228 liters, 50% less than in the Golf V. The lower volume is primarily due to the higher trunk floor. Without this, when the rear seat is folded down, there would be a step to the rear seats, which are necessarily higher up. The Golf has this, but it also holds a quarter more (1305 to 1048 liters). Kia does not specify such a maximum volume for the notchback. With the backrest up, it holds 381 liters but 30 more than the Golf. The Cerato encircles its loading sill height (69 cm) with 67 cm (steep) and 71 cm (notchback), cargo passing over it can weigh 450 kilograms (occupants are to be counted however).

The manufacturer explains in detail the noise insulation measures. The ADAC rates the noise level as low up to 130 km / h, above this it becomes obtrusive in the gasoline models, in the tested diesel it remains quiet. Its running culture is described as pleasantly quiet. American testers drew the comfort limit of 110 km / h in the 2.0 L petrol model and remembered a quieter Hyundai Elantra. This uses the same engine and runs it at 110 km / h with 3000 tours. In 2004, an Autobild test of petrol models in the Cerato measured identical values to the Golf in the urban area and one decibel above this at 130 km / h.

The security of the bodies brushes the ends of the scales.

Engines

The ratio is the same for both gasoline engines. This saves costs and results in the same speed at the same speed (3000 at 110 km / h, details in the body area ). In the diesel models, the ratio in top gear is 20 percent lower (which means that the engine speed drops to around 2400 rpm) and is adjusted slightly differently for each of the three engines. All transmissions are characterized by precise and easy gear guidance. In the ADAC test, an electric auxiliary heater only warms up the 2.0-l diesel slowly at the front, but “good” in the rear, no time information is given. The smallest diesel remained untested, its petrol counterpart took 11 minutes, the 2.0-l petrol engine took 9 minutes to heat up from −10 to +22 ° C.

In the ADAC test, the Cerato with petrol engines is slightly (2.0-l) to significantly (1.6-l) more economical than usual in 2005; the larger diesel consumes half a liter above the class average. These values coincide with those of economical Cerato drivers, but the average value is about one liter higher: 8.7 l / 100 km with the smallest gasoline engine, 9.2 with the big one, 6.3 with the smallest diesel engine and 7 liters in the big diesel. All models have a 55 l tank capacity.

The gasoline engines meet the Euro 4 emissions standard; all diesel Euro 3 , regardless of the open particulate filter that will be optional from summer 2005 . The linked engine articles provide information on retrofitting options.

In Germany only the 1.6 with 77 kW, the 2.0 with 105 kW and the diesel engines with the 1.5 CRDI with 75 kW and the 2.0 CRDI with 83 kW were available in Germany.
