The Chinese leadwort ( Ceratostigma willmottianum ), also called hornbill or hornwort , is a plant species in the leadwort family (Plumbaginaceae).
Plant description
It is a small shrub that forms a rhizome as a persistence organ and reaches heights of growth of up to 2 meters. The small, pointed leaves are densely hairy and are shed every year .
There are three to seven flowers together in an inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The five petals are fused Roehrig. The corolla tube is purple and the corolla lobes are bright blue. About 6 mm large capsule fruits with black seeds are formed.
Occurrence
This species is native to East Asia and the Himalayas (Chinese provinces: Gansu , western Guizhou , southern and western Sichuan , southeastern Xizang , eastern and northern Yunnan ). It grows in warm valleys at altitudes between 700 and 3500 m above sea level.
Today this shrub is also widespread in Europe , where it is often cultivated in private gardens because of its beauty . The plant prefers dry soils in a sunny, warm and protected south-facing position .
Superstition
In his native Tibet , lead root is revered as a symbol of wisdom .
