The new name Cadenza is derived from the musical term cadence and was introduced as part of the renaming of the model range, which Kia made earlier at the beginning of a new decade.

First generation production began in November 2009 in Hwasung, South Korea, and exports to South and Central America, Asia (except China), Oceania, the Middle East and Africa from March 2010. The Cadenza has also been available in China since June 2010, but the model never came to Europe. The Cadenza was designed by the new Kia chief designer Peter Schreyer , who previously worked for Audi .
The engine range of the front-wheel drive ranges from a 2-liter Theta II four-cylinder with 121 kW (165 hp) to a 3.5-liter Lambda II V6 . The latter produces an output of 213 kW (290 hp) at 6600 rpm and achieves a maximum torque of 338 Nm at 5000 rpm. This power level of the engine is only available in the Cadenza and is reached with a speed that is 400 revolutions higher. The power is transmitted by a 6-stage automatic with an additional manual switching mode. The Cadenza accelerates from 0-100 km / h in 7.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 230 km / h. The consumption is given as 9.4 liters per 100 km.

At the Chicago Auto Show in February 2020, Kia presented an extensively revised version of the Cadenza.
In South Korea, in addition to four different variants with a gasoline engine, a diesel version and a gasoline hybrid are also available. In the United States, however, only the most powerful gasoline engine is available.
