The Kia Clarus was a car model made by the Korean manufacturer Kia Motors . It was based on the Kia Credos model offered in Korea . With the Clarus, the group offered a mid-range model in Europe for the first time . The model was produced from May 1996 to November 2001 and then replaced by the Kia Magentis, which was introduced in September 2000 .

history

The Kia Clarus was introduced in Europe in July 1996. The model was the Mazda 626 , with which it shared technical and body components. It differed only marginally from the Korean model Credos . It was optionally available with a 1.8-liter engine (SLX) with 116 hp or a 2.0-liter engine (GLX) with an output of 133 hp.

The first generation of the Clarus was only produced in Europe as a notchback sedan. Visually, the GLX and SLX models differed in the design of the radiator grille. Both equipment variants had two airbags , electric windows at the front and central locking as standard . The GLX equipment also included a chrome grille, rear power windows, velor seats and fog lights . An anti-lock braking system was also offered together with the standard equipment shortly after the launch. An air conditioning and leather upholstery were among the few extras.

Rear view

The 2.0-liter engine from the Mazda 626 GT made 7 hp less in the Clarus due to stricter emissions standards. The design of the interior was also derived from the 626. The 1.8-liter engine, however, was an in-house development. The T8D engine was (presumably the only) engine in the T series and came onto the market in July 1996 with the Clarus . The D in the type designation stood for the double, overhead camshaft (DOHC), the 8 denoted the displacement (1, 8 ).

The 1.8-liter engine was driven by a toothed belt and was the only free runners - four-stroke engine in the former KIA program. In test reports, the unit was attested to having good driving performance, somewhat rough running characteristics and an acceptable consumption for the standards of the time (of almost 10 liters) with exhaust gas values (Euro 2) that were out of date after the facelift.

In 1999, an engine variant with gasoline direct injection was presented, which however did not go into production due to the insolvency of the engine manufacturer. It was not until 2010 that the first GDI engines in the Hyundai program were also offered in series by Kia.

Facelift

In May 1998 Kia brought the revised Clarus on the market, whereby its internal model abbreviation GC was retained.

The revised front section was also adopted for the Clarus station wagon , which was launched in Europe at the same time . In addition, the model with a 2.0-liter engine received traction control . As with the predecessor, the models had to be distinguished in terms of engine variants and equipment on the radiator grille.

On the domestic market, the Clarus was also offered with a 2.0-liter six-cylinder, which made 147 hp and also came from Mazda.
