The Kia Shuma was a compact car - car of the manufacturer Kia Motors . It was available in both a hatchback and a notchback version .

The Kia Shuma was produced in two series in Hwaseong, South Korea :

  • Shuma I; from October 1997 to December 2001
  • Shuma II; from May 2001 to August 2004

Both series versions were available in different equipment and engine variants, but there were hardly any technical differences, which is underlined by the constant internal model abbreviation FB . American crash tests also show hardly any differences between the two models, the US NCAP test even measured an overall better result for the Shuma I. Optical differences were primarily in the headlight shape and a significantly upgraded and better insulated interior. The basic equipment of the Shuma II was slightly higher than that of its predecessor. In addition, from 2003 it was available with partial leather upholstery as standard and at around the same time also optionally with two-tone full leather upholstery.

In the course of an extensive equipment upgrade in April 2003, the 1.6l engine was exchanged for a 1.8l engine and the notchback version was no longer offered in Germany. This was manufactured under license by IzhAvto after the model was discontinued in 2004 . After a debt-related break since May 2009, production is to be restarted in August 2011.

In addition, the name plate "Shuma" was only available on the rear of the Shuma I, on the Shuma II there was only a small plate on the left side of the trunk lid. Technical differences related primarily to the engine:

Shuma I

Motorization
  • 1.5-liter gasoline engine with 65 kW / 88 PS, DOHC 16V, Euro 2 (KIA BFD, largely corresponds to Mazda ZL-DE DOHC )
  • 1.8-liter gasoline engine with 81 kW / 110 PS, DOHC 16V, Euro 2 D3 (KIA T8D), only hatchback

Shuma II

Motorization
  • 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 75 kW / 102 PS, DOHC 16V, Euro 3 ( KIA A6D , largely equivalent to Mazda B6 DOHC ), until 2003
  • 1.8-liter gasoline engine with 84 kW / 114 PS, DOHC 16V, Euro 3 (KIA T8D), from 2003 in the hatchback

In 2004 the Kia Shuma II was replaced in Germany by the Hyundai Elantra -based Kia Cerato .

The KIA T8D engine was the manufacturer's own development. The (presumably only) T-series engine was first offered in 1995 in the Kia Clarus . Its D in the abbreviation indicates the double, overhead camshaft (DOHC), while the 8 describes the displacement (1, 8 ). It is driven by a toothed belt, but it is the only freewheel in the KIA program at the time. It accelerated the Shuma I three seconds faster to 100 km / h within 10.5 seconds, while the basic engine of the Shuma II caught up by two seconds. The ADAC certified the engine as having good performance, slightly rough running and significantly too high consumption (11.9L in the city). In 1999 a direct injection version of the engine was presented (T8D GDI), but no longer published due to the manufacturer's bankruptcy. In 2010 the first GDI engines appear in the Hyundai / KIA engine range ( see ).
