With 7.9 million vehicles sold, Hyundai / Kia is the fourth largest vehicle manufacturer in the world after Toyota (9.98 million), Volkswagen (9.73 million) and General Motors (9.71 million) (as of 2013). The name Kia is based on Korean "ki" ( Hanja : 起, Hangeul : 기) for ascend and "a" (Hanja: 亞, Hangeul: 아) for Asia .
history
In 1944 the "Kyongseong Precision Industry" was founded, which from 1952 manufactured bicycles in Korea under the new name "Kia Industry Company". In 1961/62, Kia founded the Korean vehicle industry with the construction of a motorcycle and a three-wheel mini truck. Almost ten years later, the first four-wheeled truck, the Kia Titan , was produced, which is still synonymous with truck in Korea today. Two years later, in 1973, the company went public. In the same year, Kia built Korea's first gasoline engine . Another year later, the first Kia car, the Kia Brisa , rolled off the assembly line , the pick-up version of which was the first Korean export car.
In 1976 Kia took over competitor Asia Motors . Two years later, Kia also built the first Korean diesel engine. From 1979 to 1981 the models Peugeot 604 and Fiat 132 were built for the Korean market under license .
In 1981 a new management team laid the foundation for further growth into a global automobile manufacturer. The focus was initially on commercial vehicles - especially the Kia Bongo . Investments and a license agreement with Mazda in 1983 enabled the production of cars again. Together with Mazda and Ford, the top seller was produced from 1986: the Kia Pride , which was sold over two million times. Expansion to America followed in 1992, and to Germany a year later. For Europe , the Kia Sportage was built by Karmann in Osnabrück between 1995 and 1998 .
In 1998 Kia came under insolvency administration due to the Asian financial crisis and was taken over by the Hyundai Group a little later . In 2000, the Hyundai Motor Group developed , which was briefly converted into the Hyundai Kia Automotive Group in 2003 . Kia has been back in the black since 1999. Together with Hyundai , they rose to the seventh largest automobile manufacturer in the world in 2004.
Since September 2007, the company's European headquarters have been located on Theodor-Heuss-Allee in Frankfurt am Main in the immediate vicinity of the exhibition grounds. The vehicles are developed for the European market in the development center in Rüsselsheim am Main (joint development center of KIA and Hyundai). Peter Schreyer , who was Head of Design at Audi from 1994 to 2002, has been Head of Design at Kia since 2006 . Albert Biermann, who was previously Deputy Head of Development at BMW M GmbH , has been Head of Development at the Hyundai Motor Group since 2015 .
Kia vehicles are produced in 15 plants in 10 countries (as of December 31, 2011).
For the first time in the company's history, Kia Motors took the top spot in the quality rating from JD Power and Associates in 2016.
Market position
Kia Motors sells approximately one third of all its vehicles in Korea and the United States. The third largest market for Kia vehicles is Europe, in which a total of 12.3% of all sales took place in 2008.

reception
Motor journalist Volker Koerdt wrote about the company's development at the end of 2018 that "ridiculed beginnings ... [became] a success story that deserves applause." In 1993, Kia sold only 611 vehicles in its first year in Germany and has grown steadily since then to over 64,000 customers in 2017. Koerdt sees various points as the basis of this success: For example, the Hyundai Motor Group , to which Kia also belongs, understood almost no other group to learn from model to model cycle. While early models were "neither intoxicating in terms of design, driving dynamics nor quality," Kia now offers top models in their respective classes. The seven-year guarantee of the vehicles is a testimony to the fact that the manufacturer really trusts its products. Peter Schreyer , Head of Design, who has been in office since 2006, continues to have a significant share in Kia's positive development . Finally, the adaptation of the product range to different markets such as Asia, the USA and Europe is one of the company's strengths.
