The Kia cee'd ( siːd , Hangeul : 기아 씨드) is a compact class passenger car from the South Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors .

In the manufacturer's product range, the cee'd replaced the Kia Cerato , which was not very successful in Europe , and is thus positioned between the small Rio and the mid-range Kia Optima . It is the first vehicle from Kia Motors that has been completely designed in Europe and tailored to the European end customer. The model has been manufactured in the Kia Motors Slovakia plant in Žilina since December 2006 .

The cee'd was first presented on September 28, 2006 at the Mondial de l'Automobile de Paris . The launch on the German market took place on January 20, 2007 with the five-door model in five possible engines and four equipment variants. In the summer of 2007 the station wagon called “cee'd_sw” followed, and at the beginning of 2008 the three-door “pro_cee'd”. The addition "ED" refers to the first generation of the model, which was mass-produced from December 2006 to March 2013 . The second generation of the cee'd was presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2012 and received the "JD" key. At the Geneva Motor Show 2018, Kia presented the third generation .

The third-generation crossover SUV Kia XCeed will also be launched in September 2019 .

Development and history

The Kia cee'd study , which was presented as a world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2006 , provided a first look at the production version . The name cee'd is pronounced like the English word seed ( dt . : Saat or seed ). It is made up of the French abbreviation for European Community ( CE ) and the abbreviation ED for "European Design". The cee'd is according to Jean-Charles Lievens, Senior Vice President of Kia Motors Europe "as it [for] the seeds for major increases in sales volumes, will realize the Kia with this new model. We wanted to introduce a fresh name that fits the central requirements of our brand: quality, trustworthiness and dynamism. "

The part of the name ED goes back to the design of the cee'd series designed in Rüsselsheim and was also the internal development code. Half a year after the first concept vehicle was published, the production model was presented at the Paris Motor Show in September 2006 . Two more cee'd studies were also on display : the pro_cee'd , a three-door version and the cee'd_sw , a combination model.

In May 2006, test production of the cee'd series began in the new Kia plant in Žilina, Slovakia , in order to optimize and coordinate the systems, technologies and work processes. The one billion euro plant employs 2,800 workers in three shifts who manufacture the engines as well as the vehicles. Series production finally started on December 7, 2006, with 75 percent of all components coming from European suppliers.

According to Jean-Charles Lievens, the start of production “should also mark a comprehensive quality offensive for our brand. The highest development and manufacturing standards as well as European-oriented design and a high-quality appearance determine every aspect of this first Kia model developed and produced in Europe. The cee'd is undoubtedly the strongest challenger our brand has ever offered in the European C-segment. "

On March 6, 2007, Kia presented the study of the convertible version excee'd at the Geneva Motor Show. Furthermore, the production version of the cee'd Sporty Wagon ("sw") was unveiled. A first model of cee'd with on LPG umgerüstetem engine was at the Auto Mobil International 2007 presented.

The Russian company Avtotor began building the Kia cee'd under license on March 15, 2007 - exactly ten years after the South Korean manufacturer's first model had been built there . Initially, the factory was supplied with original parts from Žilina and only took over the assembly, later the complete production of the car was realized in Kaliningrad .

By June 2007, more than 63,000 vehicles of the hatchback version had been produced. Two production records were set: In April, 830 units left the factory in one day and in May of the same year, 14,000 units (10,000 were planned), the largest monthly production to date.

Production of the cee'd_sw started on July 20, 2007, one month earlier than planned . In the first week of production, more than 1000 vehicles were produced. Most of them have been delivered to Kia partners in the five main European markets: Germany , Spain , Great Britain , France and Italy . The market launch for the station wagon took place in Germany on August 31, 2007.

On September 11, 2007, the production version of the pro_cee'd was presented at the 62nd IAA in Frankfurt . The market launch took place throughout Europe in 19 variants in early 2008.

On October 3, 2007, the 100,000 ran. Kia cee'd off the assembly line in Žilina. Kia is aiming for a value of 100 vehicles produced annually per employee in the full expansion stage; This would make the Slovakian Kia plant the most productive automobile plant in Europe. On October 25, 2007, six weeks ahead of schedule, production of the three-door pro_cee'd started . The pro_cee'd is the fourth model made in Europe alongside the other two cee'd variants and the Kia Sportage .

In April 2008 a new record was set for daily, weekly (4474 vehicles) and monthly production (19,300 units) with 915 units.

In September 2009, after three years of construction, a revised model was presented at the 63rd IAA in Frankfurt. While the five-door and the station wagon received a modified front and rear design, technical optimizations and minor innovations in the interior, only the interior changes and engine optimizations came into effect for the three-door. The visually redesigned pro_cee'd was to be presented in Paris in 2010. However, this date has been postponed to the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.

Three years after the opening of the plant in Žilina, in January 2010 it was 500,000. Kia model manufactured in Europe. This is a white cee'd_sw 1.6 CRDi that was donated to a transplant center in Martin .

On June 15, 2010, all models of the cee'd series with an electronic stability program that were produced between April 2008 and March 2009 were recalled to the workshops. Across Germany, 12,500 vehicles are affected in which a brake circuit fails and the braking force can be reduced.

At the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012, Kia presented the second generation of the cee'd , again developed together with the Hyundai i30, as a five-door and station wagon. The vehicle is to come onto the German market as a five-door in June and as a station wagon cee'd_sw in September 2012. In addition to the design and technology, new features include the LED daytime running lights, a parking aid also for the front, tinted side windows and chrome-plated window frames.

On January 26, 2012, a Kia cee'd , of which more than 600,000 had been built in Slovakia by then, left the Kia plant in Žilina as the 1,000,000th vehicle. Like the 500,000. cee'd will also be donated to a charitable cause. In this case the foundation " Rote Nasen Clowndoctors International ".

The third generation, which was presented again at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2018, is based on the Hyundai i30 . With the introduction of the new generation, Kia changes the model name to Ceed .

Registration numbers

Since the market launch in 2006 up to and including December 2019, a total of 177,253 Kia cee'd have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2019 was the most successful sales year with 21,473 units. One of the reasons for this is the introduction of the XCeed, which the Federal Motor Transport Authority also counts as part of this series.

technology

The Kia cee'd shares a completely newly developed floor pan and the technical base with the Hyundai i30, which appeared in July 2007 . This is why the three gasoline and three diesel engines with manual or automatic transmissions are also used in the Hyundai i30.

warranty

With the cee'd, Kia was the first automobile manufacturer to offer a standard warranty that is valid for seven years or 150,000 km for the drive train and five years or 150,000 km for the entire vehicle. This is transferable at the time of sale, provided that the prescribed maintenance work has been carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications and GMOs , but not necessarily in a Kia brand company.

In addition to the guarantee for the entire car, there is a five-year guarantee on the paintwork, a five-year mobility guarantee across Europe with unlimited kilometers and a ten-year guarantee against rust perforation. Another special feature is the two-year guarantee on selected wear parts and the battery.

As of January 1, 2010, when the 7-year warranty was extended to all Kia model series, the warranty conditions were slightly changed. Since then, the entire vehicle has had a seven-year guarantee, a twelve-year rust perforation guarantee and a mobility guarantee shortened to three years.

First generation: "ED"

The first generation of the Kia cee'd with the manufacturer's abbreviation "ED" was produced from December 2006 to March 2013. In addition to the notchback variant, the cee'd was available as a "Sporty Wagon" station wagon ( Kia cee'd_sw ) and as a coupé pro_cee'd . All bodies were built as five-seater. While the versions differ externally in various details in terms of design and the pro_cee'd only has the bonnet and the front fenders in common with the cee'd , the interior is the same in all versions except for the door panels. From autumn 2009, the vehicles were given a facelift .

Second generation: "JD"

The second generation of the Kia cee'd with the internal abbreviation “JD”, which has been in series production since April 2012, came onto the market in June 2012 initially as a five-door hatchback, which was followed in September by the Kia cee'd_sw station wagon, now known as the “Sportswagon” . From March 2013, a three-door model called pro_cee'd was offered again.

Third generation: "CD"

The third generation of the Ceed was initially launched as a five-door model at the end of June 2018.
