The Kia Rio is a small car produced since autumn 1999 by the South Korean manufacturer Kia Motors , which was introduced in Germany in late summer 2000.

In the summer of 2005, the vehicle received a successor, which is no longer offered as a combi-like five-door, but as an ordinary small car with a hatchback and, alternatively, still with a notchback (especially for Eastern Europe) and since then also on the Western European market directly with models such as the VW Polo or the Opel Corsa .

The third generation of the Rio has been available since autumn 2011. A facelift of the Kia Rio UB has been available since January 2015. The fourth generation came to dealers on February 11, 2017.

In China , the vehicle has been sold as the Kia K2 since the third generation .

The first generation was offered in South Korea from November 6, 1999. The start of sales in Europe was in August 2000 and initially only brought the hatchback sedan . The car was called that by the manufacturer, but is more of a small station wagon such as the Škoda Fabia Combi.

The notchback sedan followed in Europe in mid-2001, but was mainly sold in other markets and was only available in Germany for one year.

history

The origin of the Rio is the Pride . It was developed by Mazda in 1986 at the request of its then major shareholder Ford and has since been produced by Kia, in which Mazda held an eight percent stake from 1984. Kia primarily served to provide flexibly available production capacities and supplied South Korea and North America with its production, and from its European expansion in 1991 also Germany. Kia Pride and Mazda 121 always came from the factories of their named manufacturers, while “Ford Festivas” were manufactured by both, but never by Ford itself.

The Ford designer Toshi Saito designed the successor in Hiroshima, which already hinted at the Rio and was manufactured exclusively by Kia - namely as the Ford Aspire and Kia Avella and in sedan form as the Kia Delta. The technical advancement was taken care of by Mazda, whose revised 121 ("the bubble") is structurally identical in terms of floor pan, mechanics and parts of the body. The Aspire was skipped in Europe, so that the Rio followed the Kia Pride here .

Ford wanted to use the Rio's platform for the successor to the Aspire, but this was rejected by the new Kia owner Hyundai in 1999.

The Rio was produced at Kia 's first automobile location , which received a second plant for this purpose. In the first plant completed in 1973, it produces the Carnival . Sohari also made it possible for the manufacturer to start production of gasoline engines so that, in contrast to Asia Motors, which was later taken over, this complex component would not have to be imported in a prefabricated manner. In parallel with the production start-up of the Rio a contract for 1,999 parts assembly by AYMESA in Ecuador signed. Until the model update in 2002, both body styles were delivered and assembled on site for Latin America, and since then only the notchback kit. The Iranian SAIPA has also received this kit since 2005. It does not contain any airbags, but an MP3 radio, air conditioning, electric windows and radio remote control. Production in the Chinese joint venture Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motors was planned for 2001, but was postponed to the second Rio generation in favor of the Hyundai Accent replica Kia Qianlima .

Facelift

In October 2002 the Rio received a facelift, which included changes to the front and rear, an improved chassis and better seats . The orange turn signal covers on the headlights were replaced by white ones in October 2003.

Design and equipment

After the Kia Avella underwent small changes in equipment and appearance in each of its years of construction, it went over to the Rio at the end of 1999 with a comprehensive facelift. The change is most evident outside. Min-Ho Gho gave the vehicle a very unique design, inside Sae-Young Son changed the sephia- like curve to angular clarity, but the arrangement of all elements was retained. In the meantime he was also responsible for the second Sorento .

The background noise is determined by engine noises, rattling and squeaking, however, are minimal ex works. With the facelift, the bulkhead insulation grew to seven layers, the roof lining was "generously" filled with foam, the engines were better decoupled and their intake tracts were noise-reduced. The ADAC found the result satisfactory up to 130 km / h. It is unusual, but cost-saving, to use the same gear ratio and thus gearbox for both engines. Therefore the speed does not decrease with the larger motor at the same speed (see also motors ).

On the comfort side, air conditioning was available for every equipment, but never as standard. The only exception was the “Ipanema” special model, which also included lowering, 16-inch alloy wheels, sports rear mufflers and seat covers with “Ipanema” lettering. It was only sold in 2002 until the facelift.

With this, the engines , the chassis , as well as interior materials and seats were improved. The latter were identical to the Hyundai Accent , which had been redesigned at the same time, and thus received a lumbar support, were height and tilt adjustable and supplemented by a folding driver armrest. Her upholstery became thicker and tighter. Compared to the Accent, the Rio had neither a radio remote control nor an on-board computer or a diesel engine, but from the facelift onwards it had a rear heater under the front seats.

Apart from the notchback, the rear seat can be folded down in parts, the loading volume of 449 to 1277 liters may weigh between 300 and 364 kilograms, depending on the equipment, before the facelift it was 30 kilograms more due to less insulation material. The notchback transports up to 428 kilograms. With this best value in class, as with all payload values, the passengers are to be counted. The loading edge of the trunk is one of the lowest at 65 cm.

landing gear

The Rio has the same chassis as its predecessor, but now weighs 100 to 200 kg more. The MacPherson front and torsion beam -Hinterachse lead as in Avella to a safe, predictable cornering, by the front-heavy weight distribution remains understeer . The suspension is considered to be soft, but directly when reporting bumps.

With the facelift in October 2002, the floor area was stiffened, the stabilizers reinforced all around, the 13- for 14-inch wheels exchanged and the steering more direct. The turning circle has a diameter of 9.5 meters.

safety

On the safety side, there were two front and two optional side airbags in Germany (standard from 2003), ABS with brake force distribution and, from the model update, belt force limiters for the front seats. The headrests on all five seats are height-adjustable, but there is no Isofix device.

The braking distance was shortened with the facelift, but remained longer than that of the best in class. The directional stability was rated as good due to the balanced braking force distribution. A European crash test was not carried out for the Rio, the American NCAP test gave it four stars. However, this result was already achieved by its predecessor.

reliability

In its main inspections, the TÜV found defects in the Rio DC more frequently than in other vehicles of the same year of construction. The main criticisms were the brakes, the wearing parts of which have to be replaced relatively often, as well as the shock absorbers, especially those on the rear axle. Overall, the TÜV sees the Rio DC "in the green". The American JD Power Report comes to a similar conclusion. It includes all elements of a vehicle, the TÜV is only dedicated to driving safety, but not window regulators, air conditioning or other electronics. The TÜV list also contains older vehicles, the JD Power Report only asks buyers once, after three years, about breakdowns. Three years after the start of production, Popular Mechanics published a driver survey, according to which it reflects the years 2000 to 2002. Sixty percent of the owners did not report any defects, the most frequently mentioned error was the glowing engine warning symbol, which concerned automatic vehicles and was remedied using a revised control unit. Illuminated airbag warning lights and complaints about brake noise and interior odor as well as cooling water losses were next most frequent. Three to four percent of the drivers named these points. In forums, individual drivers report a leaky weld seam between the roof and tailgate, through which water penetrates. Sealing with silicone fixed this. More drivers report prematurely worn wheel bearings that cause a grinding or grinding noise. The cause would be insufficient factory lubrication. When installing new bearings, some drivers recommend their own branded workshops, as a proper replacement requires special tools that are not available to non-brand mechanics. Wear then repeats itself within weeks. Other drivers see the cause as an incorrectly installed front wheel suspension in the affected vehicles at the factory. This puts a strain on the camps. For permanent repairs, they recommend replacing the suspension after the problem has been resolved for you.

Engines

The Mazda B6D with 1.6 l displacement. It was only available in the Kia Rio outside of Germany

Alluding to the time of their debut, the Rio engines received "Millennium Technology", abbreviated as "Mi-Tech" on the engine cover. While the manufacturer did not explain this in more detail, customers willing to renovate found out their basis. All three engines are based on the Mazda B6D. Kia previously manufactured this under license for the Sephia . Now it was modified for the first time. The US-exclusive 1.6 liter "A6D" differs from the Mazda base in the cylinder head. In Europe this engine was available in the Shuma II . In the Rio, the engine range in this country ended with the 1.5 L "A5D", which has a smaller cylinder diameter. The 1.3 L entry-level drive “A3E” also shortens the stroke and dispenses with a second camshaft (denoted by the “E” instead of the “D” for DOHC ). Kia's derivatives from the 1.6-l engine differ significantly from the cylinder dimensions of the Mazda "B5D" and "B3E" in the Rio predecessors and lose the free- wheeling property. Instead, they have less cooling water with six liters, which leads to faster heating of the engine and catalytic converter and thus lower levels of pollutants. The engines thus achieve Euro 3 and D4 , which they have ahead of their base, whose use was ended by Mazda in the 1990s. Acoustically, the Rio engines are considered rough despite their five-bearing crankshaft , but reliable, which Kia underlined with the ten-year drive guarantee in the USA. The drives have hydraulic valve lifters and a cylinder head made of light metal, their engine block is made of gray cast iron . The toothed belt must be replaced after 90,000 km. The ratio of the 1.3 and 1.5 l engines is the same, that of the 1.6 l engine becomes longer in the second decimal place from fourth gear. They are all controlled by a Bosch ME- Motronic manufactured by Siemens. The standard consumption is 7.2 l. The smaller engine consumes 0.1 liters less.

The second Rio hit the European market in July 2005, one quarter after the launch in South Korea. Its 25 centimeter shorter body (3.99 m) now clearly classified it as a small car . In this segment it was again the longest vehicle when it entered the market. The Rio increased in height (5 cm) and width (1.5 cm), as did the wheelbase (9 cm).

In contrast to the very similar Hyundai Accent , the Rio was only offered as a hatchback in Europe, but still as a notchback in other countries.

history

The Rio JB is largely identical to the Accent MC . The platform was developed together with Hyundai, the models differ in design and equipment . The new platform was developed from the Accent LC (2000) via the Matrix (2001) and Getz (2002) to the base of the Rio.

Rio as a study: the Kia Sport , 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show

The new Rio was presented in autumn 2004 as the “Kia Sport” study with 147 kW (200 PS) at the Paris Motor Show , followed a year later by the equally powerful Accent study at the IAA . The engine output was almost halved for the series versions, but remained well above the segment typical - from twelve percent for the 1.6-liter to 46 percent for the diesel. The LED taillights and indicators as well as the leather lining of the interior were not adopted. The screen and 18 "wheels were also reserved for the study. Only the engine is available today in a comparable form as the basic drive for the Genesis Coupe .

Two years after the market launch, the Rio Hybrid followed in small numbers for South Korean ministries as a test platform for the mild hybrid Elantra LPI from 2009. Kia also equipped this with a CVT automatic and the drive concept of the Rio, but swapped the gasoline for LPI . In the Rio, a gasoline engine with 66 kW (90 PS) and an electric motor with 12 kW (16 PS) were coupled, with the latter only supporting, but not driving alone. The continuously variable transmission and hybrid drive were new for the group in the Rio, and the lithium polymer battery was new for the automotive industry . The overall considerable development effort was checked by the 3400 test vehicles in everyday life before the drive with the Elantra became generally available. Thanks to the new energy storage system, the Rio Hybrid weighed 220 kilograms less than the production version and consumed around one liter less fuel.

Like the first generation, the Rio was created for the world market at the Sohari 2 plant , but locally manufactured for individual regions. The reasons for this are mostly due to import duties on complete vehicles, which can be avoided by delivering individual parts . Examples of this are the Indonesian “PT. Kia Mobil ”in Jakarta and Vietnam's first automobile plant in Quảng Nam , whose vertical range of manufacture is as low as that of the Indonesian plant. The production of models from different manufacturers is characteristic. China switched from this production support to production promotion in 2005 by skimming off the profits of foreign manufacturers if the components used are primarily manufactured outside of China. As a result, the vertical range of manufacture in the Chinese joint venture Dongfeng Motor Corporation - Yueda -Kia is the highest of all non-Korean Rio plants.

Design and equipment

Compared to its predecessor, the exterior was more reserved and the designers were no longer named. Inside, the close relationship to the Hyundai Accent , which appeared a year later, is visible.

The extended wheelbase promotes better cushioning and a larger interior. The rear, together with the inclined backrest, convey the best sense of space in a small car of the time. The Toyota Yaris offered the greatest legroom .

The backrest can be tilted in two stages and folded down in two parts, but not slidable as in Mitsubishi Colt , Fiat Panda and Toyota Yaris (only standard on the former; deleted with the 2008 facelift). When set up, it limits the trunk to 270 liters, when folded down, the volume increases to 1145. This corresponds to the VW Polo and the class average. At 67 cm, the loading sill is the second lowest small car at the time, and the load that passes over it can weigh 425 kg (however, the occupants are to be counted). The manufacturer paid great attention to noise insulation. As a result, the Rio reaches the level of other small cars, which in turn differ little from one another. The ADAC found the diesel to be quieter than the petrol models, which, in addition to less insulation, were given a shorter gear ratio to compensate for their lower torque ( cf. ).

The equipment has been fanned out in four lines with additional packages. On the comfort side, air conditioning was still not included in the basic equipment (see Accent ). In addition, there were these and power windows and exterior mirrors, a warning lamp for low windshield water level and a radio remote control on the steering wheel. In the uppermost equipment, an automatic air conditioning replaced the manual system, parking sensors warned when reversing and an on-board computer showed average consumption, range, daily kilometers and outside temperature. In addition, exterior mirrors and front seats can be heated and the doors can be operated remotely. However, the associated key is not located by the car, so it is possible to lock out.

Audio side, all included Rio JB an MP3 compatible CD Radio with USB port at the bottom of the center console and 4 speakers. The top equipment is complemented by two tweeters. Unwanted vibrations would not arise. A “heat protection glazing” is standard, the top equipment also contained (in Germany for a surcharge) a UV and infrared insulating front pane. The seat is adjustable in height and inclination on the driver's side, and a fold-out armrest is also standard. The lumbar support of the predecessor was removed from the Rio and Accent.

In terms of color, darker, gray-black tones have now been chosen. For the highest equipment (in Germany at an additional cost), red partly replaced the gray, for example on the black-rimmed, red seats, on the red-black steering wheel and gear knob as well as some red contrasting stitching. Outside the DA-CH region, a lighter version was available. This swapped all gray for beige, which created an accentuated interior with black contrasting elements. The center console was given an aluminum look in medium (Austria) or top equipment (Germany, Switzerland).

Facelift

In April 2010 there was a mostly optically subtle model update . The air flow was accentuated, for which the rear received a diffuser and the front received new air inlets and grilles. In addition, the headlights were darkened, the side protection strips painted and the side mirrors provided with indicators (the latter only in the Spirit equipment ). Inside, the steering wheel and gear knob have been given the shape of Soul and Forte , while the instruments are illuminated in white instead of orange. The Rio is thus also presented in the current Kia design line, recognizable on the outside by the typical chrome clasp ("Tiger Nose").

The equipment features have been rearranged into two levels, of which the higher ( Spirit ) can be expanded with packages. The entry-level Vision is linked to the basic engine and has air conditioning as the only option.

The flip key for the radio remote control, other rim designs and a switching point display were added.

landing gear

The chassis is described by the majority as firm, but consistently comfortable. Compared to the Accent, the overall impression is balanced, only short bumps at low speed are passed through. This is slightly below the best in class. The ADAC found the chassis only satisfactory. Reason for devaluation would be a hesitantly regulating ESP in the evasive test with 90 km / h. For the same model and year of manufacture, the motorline.cc site described an early and rigid regulation of the system, the car newspaper a safe evasive behavior when the ESP is switched on and off . Similarly, the previously tested petrol model showed “good” driving stability in the ADAC evasion test. The ESP is helping to "keep on track". The ADAC gave the steering a grade better in 2006 than in 2005, but with the same assessment of “still acceptable” directness. Other sources describe it between “slightly callous” and “precise” - “direct”, as in the case of the ESP without differentiating between diesel and gasoline models.

The turning circle grew from 9.5 to 9.84 meters in diameter.

safety

On the safety side, there are front, side and head airbags that extend to the rear seat (the exception is the Attract line with only two front airbags). In Austria, the active head restraints on the front seats were reserved for the top equipment (“Sport Pro”), in Germany they were optional in the base line in 2005 , then standard after that and above. They are no longer available in Switzerland since the facelift. The rear seats contain three-point Isofix brackets for child seats throughout Europe . The headrests of all five seats are height adjustable. The electric window lifters do not contain anti-trap protection, but, unlike manual ones, can be deactivated by the driver. In the event of an accident, the doors unlock automatically, but little force can be applied to their hinged door handles.

Active equipment, i.e. accident-avoiding equipment, includes ABS and an ESP , which is not always standard . It was not available for some basic lines ( Hot and Motion in Austria, Trend in Switzerland), but optional for others ( Attract and Base in Germany, the latter has been standard since 2006). Above the basic equipment, ESP was mostly standard, as in Germany and Austria.

The directional stability was rated as good thanks to the balanced braking force distribution, and the braking distance was sufficient. Autozeitung and ADAC measured an average of 42 meters with ten full brakes from 100 km / h.

EU NCAP

  • Adults:
  • Children:
  • Pedestrian:

US NCAP

  • Front driver: Passenger:
  • Side driver: Passenger:

The US NCAP tests driving at 46 km / h against a concrete wall. A deformable barrier, which is modeled on a limousine, is brought up to the side at 63 km / h. The American traffic safety authority only measures the upper body from the front and only the chest area from the side.

IIHS

  • Frontal test:   acceptable
  • Side test:    bad
  • Roll-over test:  acceptable
  • Rear impact: acceptable with active headrests, without: bad
  • Bumper test: bad

The IIHS test of American insurance companies expands and changes the Euro NCAP procedures. Only the front test is the same. Therefore, both point to hard structures in the knee area, which are problematic for the driver, since the barrier is on his side. The vehicle was driven onto a deformable barrier with 40% coverage, which simulates a vehicle of the same weight. The barrier is built so that two 64 km / h fast vehicles are simulated. At the side, the two NCAP methods measure with a limousine-like barrier, while the IIHS uses an SUV-like barrier. Therefore, its rating is below the NCAP results: The driver hardly has any protection below his head, but the passenger sitting behind him has acceptable to good protection. In sedans and in the pole test (both Euro NCAP), the driver's area also achieved this good level. The IIHS rear impact test shows the effect of the active head restraints. Without them, the Rio achieves an inadequate result, and with them an acceptable result. The body structure already showed good strength in the front tests, which was confirmed in the IIHS rollover test. The Rio just misses the highest rating here. The bumper test makes purely economic considerations. Here, the damage pattern in parking bumps is determined in four individual tests and in the case of the Rio, a cost-intensive but class-standard one is determined.

The Rio moves in the middle of the competition at the time. The Chevrolet Aveo was rated lower , while Toyota Yaris , Honda Jazz and the Renault Clio , Opel Corsa and Fiat Grande Punto , which were tested in Euro NCAP alone , offered better protection .

reliability

Comparison between the first and second generation.

A Canadian used goods advisor summed up the reliability 2011 as follows: rising, but not yet on the level of Hyundai. It relates to JD Power surveys on three-year Rio JB . These began for the 2006 model year with below-average satisfaction in all areas, reached an average level for interior and electronics in 2007 and an above-average level for the latter in 2008. The other areas remained slightly below average. More recent three-year surveys are not yet possible, but Kia extended the warranty to seven years with the model update ( details ).

Questions were asked about engine and transmission problems on the drive side, abnormal noises from the drive, and pulling in one direction while driving and braking maneuvers. The irregular idling of some 1.6-liter engines during the cold start phase and / or glowing engine warning lights were criticized, which was remedied by software updates (model years 2006 to 2008). In model year 2009, the cause of glowing engine warning symbols is more of a defective knock sensor that was replaced during a service campaign.

warranty

Rio approved as of January 1, 2010 are backed by a seven year or 150,000 km warranty. It automatically changes to later owners, but requires continuous, punctual maintenance according to the manufacturer's specifications. In terms of punctuality, the manufacturer tolerates a delay of two months or 2000 km, provided the delay is not the cause of a warranty claim. This is at the upper end of the goodwill statements in an Autobild survey. Maintenance according to manufacturer specifications can also be carried out by independent or non-branded workshops. According to their own information, 31 percent of them have "always" and another 30 percent "occasionally" access to the manufacturer-specific information. Access to the systems is not yet very practical. The ADAC therefore recommends that the specified maintenance be confirmed in writing. Avoiding Kia workshops, however, reduces the likelihood of receiving goodwill. This would be an option for anything that the guarantee does not cover. While the guarantee is contractually regulated and thus predictable, the goodwill is contract-free and allows the manufacturer to make individual decisions. If the guarantee comes into effect, the repairs must also be carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications. Any repairs may only be carried out by Kia service partners.

Engines

There was a choice of one diesel and two petrol engines, all certified according to Euro 4 and not previously installed in any other vehicle apart from the larger petrol engine. An open diesel filter was optional from 2006 and, even with these restrictions, was still an exception in the segment. The diesel was canceled with the model update for the DA-CH region, from model year 2011 the petrol engines meet Euro 5. All engines are shifted using a five-speed gearbox. A four-speed automatic transmission is also available for the 1.6-liter petrol engine .

The larger petrol engine offers advantages in the lowest speed range due to variable valve control, but otherwise hardly differs from the basic engine, report test drivers. On the contrary, it sounds more strenuous and overall louder at higher speeds. The ADAC describes the 1.4-liter as consistently low-vibration and cultivated.

In test reports, the diesel engine is praised for its smoothness and pulling power. In the ADAC test, its electrical auxiliary heating led to rapid warming that was one minute behind the petrol model (duration from -10 to + 22 ° C).

The long shift paths of the smooth, but not very precise shifting found criticism. Even on slight inclines, it is needed to shift down in petrol models. Their gear ratio is identical for the two petrol engines. This saves costs and results in the same speed at the same speed. For the diesel, the transmission has a longer gear ratio from second gear, at 120 km / h it reaches 2500 revs (petrol engines: 3000 / min).

The third generation of the Rio was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in early March and has been available since September 9, 2011. The car is offered in Europe as a three- and five-door model. Since the end of 2011, a notchback version has been available again in Asia and the USA.

In addition to a completely new look, which is based on the current brand face of Kia, there is a 1.1 liter 75 hp diesel engine with a standard consumption of 3.2 l / 100 km. At the time of the presentation, this would be the best value for mass-produced cars. In addition, a 1.25 L with 86 hp, a 1.4 l petrol engine with 109 hp and a further 1.4 liter diesel engine with 90 hp are available.

With the exception of the smallest gasoline engine, all engines have a six-speed manual gearbox, a four-speed automatic transmission is also available for the 1.4-liter gasoline engine and the 1.6-liter gasoline engine offered in the USA is also available with a six-speed Step automatic available.

At Auto Shanghai in April 2011, a version for the Chinese market made its debut with the Kia K2. This came on the market in summer 2011.

In January 2015, Kia launched a facelift of the Kia Rio UB on the European market.
