The Fortunabrunnen is a fountain in the Munich district of Lehel . It was created in 1907 by the Munich sculptor Karl Killer . The reason for the construction was the redesign of the square in front of the Isartor .
In 1896 the east side of Isartorplatz was rebuilt. To create a closed series around the entire square, representative five-storey apartment buildings were built there. The square itself was enlarged by the standardization of the buildings. In 1907 the city of Munich decided to equip the area gained with a well system.
Killer created an allegory of the beneficial powers of water in contemporary Art Nouveau . The octagonal fountain basin made of red marble is adorned with finely worked reliefs depicting scenes from agriculture. In the middle, a three-meter-high bronze figure stands on a stone base . It shows the Roman goddess of luck Fortuna , who holds a richly decorated cornucopia in both hands as an attribute . Little mermaids guard the gargoyles at their feet .
